How to Pray
After this manner therefore pray:
Our Father who is in heaven, Hallowed be your name.
Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil:
For yours is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, now and forever. Amen.
Prayer is when we, by our own will, enter into communion with God. According
to St. John Damascene; "Prayer is the raising of one's mind and heart to
God or the requesting of good things from God."
We must allow God to teach us how to pray. "He who humbles himself will be
exalted; humility is the foundation of prayer. Only when we humbly acknowledge
that we 'do not know how to pray as we ought,' are we ready to receive freely
the gift of prayer."(Catechism of the Catholic Church)
There are four classifications of prayer; 1)Adoration 2)Praise 3)Thanksgiving
and 4)Petition. To petition in prayer means we are asking God to do something
on earth. This can be for personal concerns or for others.
What is intercessory prayer
Intercession means to stand between two parties to mediate or to plead someone's
case. Christian intercession is "praying for others, caring for them in the
presence of God, pleading their cause and offering their need in what has
been called the 'Prayer of love'."(Dictionary of the Ecumenical Movement)
According to the church father Hegesippus, James the brother of Jesus would
pray at the Temple were he "was often found on his knees beseeching forgiveness
for the people, so that his knees grew hard like camel's from his continually
bending them."
