C.R.F.C.V.B. The Canadian Relief Fund for Chernobyl Victims in Belarus is a registered non-profit Ottawa based charity with 50 groups across Canada. It was founded in 1989 to provide humanitarian and medical aid to the people of Belarus who continue to live every day amidst the radioactive pollutants of the world's worst nuclear disaster. Why We Do It!Belarus received approximately 70% of the radioactive fallout from Chernobyl. The amount of contamination has been compared to 200 times that emitted by the bombs dropped on Nagasaki and Hiroshima, Japan. Today, the levels are still dangerously high. These children are suffering from high levels of radiation in their bodies and are at increased risk of thyroid cancer, leukemia, cataracts and other childhood diseases due to the suppression of their natural immune system by continuous exposure. This respite in our clean uncontaminated environment with access to fresh air, food, and vitamins, will build up the children's damaged immune systems to such a degree that their doctors believe the equivalent of two years of life are restored to them upon return. Although they remain at high risk for the development of thyroid cancer, with increased weight and improved immune systems, the quality of their lives is maximized.
Who We Are and What We DoThe Mississauga group was formed in February of 1999 and follows the guidelines of the National Organization in Ottawa. We bring children over during the summer for visits ranging from six to twelve week. The time spent here in clean surroundings with a warm, supportive and loving environment, access to fresh food, clean air and water goes a long way to improve the health of these children. The group as a whole is responsible for raising the necessary funds to cover the cost of airfare and medical insurance to bring the children over. The host families are responsible for day to day expenses. Because some of the children arrive in Canada before the end of the school year, both the Peel Board and the Dufferin Peel Separate School Board have generously given their permission for the children to attend classes with their host families child. |
