******Notice that in my direct line, my POPE surname is continued by the mother of John Richard POPE. This is the big family mystery. Sallie (or Arena) bore two children and either was unmarried or divorced and changed her name back to POPE.
******* One story has it that there was a rift and a separation because of the Civil War. Another possibility is that her married name was also POPE. The POPE name was widespread and popular in North Carolina and it was not unusual for cousins to marry. We can find no marriage license.
