Groovin', Swing Style!
On the weekend of my best friend's birthday and my own, a group of my friends and I went to a "Swingin' In The Streets" festival in a neighboring state. What a thrill! I had never even danced before. The extent of my abilities is "The Twist", "The Mashed Potato", and "The Funky Chicken". Way hip, right? Not! But by the time our groovin' night was over, I had thoroughly fallen head over heels in love with the art of swing dancing.
The next day, us girls
that had not gotten everything down had been tutored by our friends that
had, and we all bought some c.d.'s of Swing Christian Praise music (trust
me, you've not lived until you've heard the Swing rendition of 'Amazing
Grace'!!). I came home and taught my 5 brothers all of the basic six steps
I had learned, and we sometimes have our own little family swing parties!
Someday, I hope to take some lessons, and perfect what little skill I have.
The coolest thing about
swingin' is that it is so easy to learn. Once you get 6 simple little steps
down, you look like you know what you're doing!
If you'd like to get started, but don't see any chance of there being a Swing Fest in your area, here's an awesome site with step-by step(pun intended) instructions. It may look intimidating at first,but with a little bit of practice, you'll be a swingin' hip cat in no time!
