The Kriegs were among the oldest inhabitants of the village of Neumuehl, in Baden, Germany. There is a Pfundez Hansel Krieg recorded in 1371 and a Hans Krieg in 1544. As the spelling of names then was very irregular, it is likely that Cornelius Krieck spelled his surname both ways. and was a descendent of the earlier Kriegs.
Due to its position on the main road leading to the Rhein bridge at Kehl and the major city of Strassburg in Alsace, the village of Neumuehl , in the course of history, had to suffer in every war. After the French Revolution, 1789-1801, there began an exodus of area inhabitants, many coming to the USA. With the later Napoleonic wars and the Revolution of 1848 conditions worsened even more and in 1852 Michael Krieg and his family were permitted to emigrate. They joined the families of Rapp and Keller, who had emigrated earlier, in southern Indiana.
