GDPC History and Purpose
The Greater Dallas Planning Council was founded in 1946 to bring attention to the principle planning needs of the Dallas area and to provide support and leadership for essential programs.
Early Planning council efforts focused on transportation, urban planning and design, and water resources. Today the Planning council addresses a number of additional metropolitan issues including education, housing, public safety and economic development.
Monthly programs present timely and sometimes controversial viewpoints on planning-related issues of both immediate and long-range interest. The Council also highlights quality planning efforts in the public and private sectors and acts as a forum to facilitate communication and understanding among diverse Dallas groups.
The Planning council is an independent organization whose members encompass a broad cross-section of the business, government and civic communities. The common bond is a determination to make the greater Dallas area a responsive and progressive environment for all its people.
