Quilts Quilts Quilts

My interest in quilting started in 1988 when I attended a patchwork
and quilting course. Unfortunately at that time I was still working
and unable to pursue my new found interest. After Joshua was born,
I met some lovely ladies at my children's play group and there
my interest in quilts was revived.

My first quilt a 4-block wall hanging

My first full size quilt 'Grandmother's Flower Garden'

After completing my first quilt, I felt inspired and started
on my first full-sized quilt called a Grandmother's Flower Garden
for my daughter Sara-Ann. It was at this time also that I met
and started sewing with a group of wonderful ladies who call themselves
the World-Wide Quilters. This is because they hail from
different parts of the globe.

We've had ladies in the group who came from, Australia,
New Zealand, England, USA, Philippines, Canada, Scotland
and Taiwan and of course Singapore. Many in the group are
expatriates and the group has changed over the years but its spirit
is still one of camaraderie and joy in sharing our craft with others.

WWQ Group Picture

The WWQ meet Friday mornings between 9.30 to 12 noon
at a different home each week. It's usually morning
coffee time and the morning does sometimes stretch
into lunch when its someone's birthday or farewell.

Busy Stitching

Over the years, I enjoyed making several more quilts
and some of them are listed here in my Gallery of Quilts.

. Dresdan Plates
This queen-sized bed quilt was made for my mother
who's also an avid patchworker. She's been making quilts
for everyone but had none for herself so I decided to give
her one for Christmas 1997. It took me 18 months to piece
and to get it quilted. Here's a close up of one of the blocks.

House & Stars
Made for an aunt who loves craft work.
This lap sized quilt was completed in a year.
House Enlarged The house is the center of the quilt
and the flowers and footpath have been embroidered on.

Joshua's Choice
At two, my son Joshua was quite sure of what he liked.
From his love of dinosaurs, cars, animals, rockets, kites
and sailboats, this quilt was started. It took me a good
two years to piece, applique and quilt this single-bed size
quilt but Josh and I are both pleased with the result.

Kit's Quilt
Made for my sister-in-law as a birthday present.
It's partly pieced and part applique and took me a year to complete.

Mariner's Compass
My first Mariner's Compass was made for my husband.
Apart from the sides, most of the quilting was ditched.
I'm now working on my second compass, its one of
my favorite patterns.

Christmas Tree

Made and given as a present for Christmas to an aunt.

Anniversary Cushions
This was my last completed project, made for the
15th wedding anniversary of friends. Mary likes cats and
his name is Robin, that says it all ......

Churn Dash
A birthday present to an uncle. It's a lap sized quilt
stripped pieced and quilted on the machine. It was pieced
and quilted in about a month. One of my faster projects.!!!

Uschi's Baskets
A birthday gift for a friend whose fave colours are pink and blue.
This quilt was my first attempt at machine applique.
It took about six months to complete and hand quilt.

Friendship Stars
My first friendship quilt. Some of the ladies in my sewing group
stitched me two 8" stars each and these were put together
to make this quilt.

Little Houses
Another friendship quilt. I received 24 little 6" houses
from my sewing group and these I divided into 2 sets
and made up lap sized quilts of 12 houses each for my 2 children.
I added a frame of different colours round each house,
the white background and a colourful border. My children
love these quilts and because they're machine quilted
they're really durable.

Lucas' Bear
A crib sized quilt for a friend's baby
was hurriedly pieced, tied and hand carried
to Chicago for little Lucas. It took only
two weeks to put this quilt together and
I enjoyed appliquing teddy.

One of the most enjoyable projects I did last year
was a 'Round Robin'There were 5 of us from the
sewing group who decided it would be fun to try it
and I must say results were satisfying ! We had
a set of rules to follow and none of us saw the
pieced tops until they were completed.

We each made a centre block which got passed around
in an envelope with our own symbols. Each of us added
a border onto the block. The first border had to be strips
of not more than 1-1/2" in width. The second was
something pertaining to the person who made the central block.
The third was a border of triangles or rectangles and
the final border had to be appliqued.

My Round Robin
Penny's Round Robin
Ineka's Round Robin
Elizabeth's Round Robin
Mary's Round Robin

Like all quilters, I'm a fabricholic. I daren't
go into quilt shops or fabric shops for fear of coming
away with more fabric then space to keep them.

The other quirk common to all patchworkers and
quilters are the way we all tend to have several projects
going at the same time. What I have now are something like
8 to 10 projects, all in various stages !!! When I see a
block or fabric I like, that's it. My mind just starts
working out ways I can make a block or use a fabric.

To me, fabric and craft stores are traps and I'd gladly be
caught in them for hours or days. Because I have a family
and other commitments, I have to be very disciplined.
From other quilters, I've learnt that my addiction
to fabrics, blocks and the silly grin I wear when
I'm in a quilting group or in a quiltshop is very sane !
