* The Tartan on the border is called "The Newfoundland Tartan"

JOSEPH R. SMALLWOOD
This is the man who brought us into confederation. He was our first Premier and remained so from 1949 - 1972. During his life he was known as "The only living Father of Confederation". A remarkable man, who came from a small community called Gambo. He was self educated & was a radio host before he started his career in politics. He has also written the complete "Encyclopedia Of Newfoundland".

Newfoundland Coat of Arms
This Coat of arms was adopted in 1638. The Supporters are 2 Beothuk Inadians (now exticnt mostly due to small pox, influenza & "lead piosoning").
The Shield: The white cross on the red background is a reversal of the Cross of St. George (The old flag of England). The lion (England) & Unicorn (Scottland) are the supporters of the British Coat of Arms.
An interesting point is that on top of teh shield is an elk. Ironic, considering there are no elk in Newfoundland. I would assume that it is the designers interpretation of a Caribou.
The Motto : "Seek ye first the Kingdom of God".

MAP OF NEWFOUNDLAND
Just thought you might like to see where we are & what we look like :)

PITCHER PLANT
The Pitcher Plant is the provincial flower & it is found quite easily in just about any marsh. It is also a carniverous plant. It fills the little cups with rain water & *ahem* drowns it insect victims.

ST. JOHN'S
This is a panoramic view of St. John's taken from signal hill.

SIGNAL HILL
A historic site located here in St. John's. During the 17 & 18 hundreds, the French & teh British fought for control of Nfld. Many of the battles fought, where fought there, on Signal Hill. It is called Signal Hill for several reasons. The first is that years ago, when an enemy vessle was sighted outside the harbour, a signal cannon would be fired. But I don't believe that the name really took hold till after Luciano Marconi sent the first wireless message overseas from that site. From then on it was officially known as Signal Hill. The tower you see in the picture is called Cabot Tower, was built in 1897 to commemorate Newfoundlands discoverer, John Cabot. It was used during both world wars as a communications center.

ICE BERG
This is one of the many ice bergs that *visit* our province during the months of May & June. Some stay here as late as July or August.

PUFFIN
The famous puffin. Newfoundland's official bird. Durned silly bird can hardly fly, but it sure can swim. They are found in the "Bay Bulls Sanctuary".
