Welcome to my homesteader help page! I built this site in order to provide help for new homesteaders and tips for those of you who are already established in our GeoCities community.
I've set this site up so that new homesteaders can quickly move into their homesteads. There are several sections devoted to these people. You'll also find links to some great graphics sites, HTML help resources, and GeoCities resources.
First, a little bit about myself, so that you know who I am and how I gained my experience with GeoCities.
I established my first GeoCities homestead in February 1999. It started as a very simple site - a single page (every journey begins with the first step). I built the original page using Netscape Composer. I knew NOTHING about HTML coding.
I never heard from my Community Leader - no welcome letter, no offer for help. My site was hidden behind the default "I'm not moved in" page for several months! I was unaware of any kind of local online assistance.
With this in mind, I sought out online HTML resources. Using the knowledge I gained in this manner, I began to write my own HTML code. The first page I ever created without the aid of an offline composer can be found here.
In late February 1999 I applied for the Heartland Hallmarks award. This was not given, because my homestead didn't have enough depth (it requires at least three pages of original content)). So I began to make massive changes to my homestead.
In April 1999 I became the webmaster for my organization's website (I've since passed that responsibility on to someone else, since I will be leaving this little island paradise soon). I totally rebuilt the website, learning a lot about website design and navigation. What I learned from that experience I applied to my own homestead here in GeoCities.
In June 1999. after I totally reconstructed my homestead, I requested a critique and review of my homestead. One of the reviewers suggested that I apply to become a Community Leader. I did so. I also applied for the Heartland Hallmarks Award, which I received.
I was accepted into CL training, and completed the training in July 1999. I was assigned to monitor 500 homesteads in Heartland Creek. I also joined two committees to assist homesteaders.
Why am I telling you all this? To prove to you that, even if you know nothing about building a web page, you can build a great GeoCities homestead!
