The main direction of my Reed research is to prove a connection between my known ancestor, William Reed, and a suspected relative, Hamilton Reed. William and Hamilton not only lived in adjoining counties in Indiana, they were married to first cousins and even some of their grandchildren married into the same families. My search for the ancestors of these two men is now back into the middle 1700's in Virginia. Specifically the counties of Loudoun, Fairfax and Frederick.

William Reed (son of William Reed and Sarah Coombs) was born November 7, 1796, most likely in Fayette Co. Pa., but it's possible he may have been born in Kentucky, as there are indications that his family may have sold out and moved to Kentucky around the time of his birth.William was married November 17, 1817 in Clark Co. Indiana, to Nancy Pound (dau. of Joseph Pound and Elizabeth Stark) Nancy was born October 20, 1799 in Clark Co. Indiana. Her family migrated from Cumberland, Maryland to Nelson Co. Kentucky around 1786. Their path took them from Maryland to Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, by way of Uniontown, Fayette Co. Pa. So there is a good possibility her family met William's family on their way through to Kentucky. Traveling with Nancy's family was her Uncle's family (Thomas Pound and Sarah Kester)

Hamilton Reed (son of James Reed and Elizabeth Swassick) married Rebecca Pound (dau. of Thomas Pound and Sarah Kester) on April 14, 1814, in Butler Co. Ohio.Hamilton was originally from Fairfax Co. Virginia and his father is listed in DAR records as a veteran of the Revolutionary War. Hamilton's grandfather was reportedly named George Reed, but I have nothing further on him.

I had always assumed that in the late 1700's, when a son or daughter married and left home to migrate west, there was a good chance that they would never see their families again. I now find that this was hardly the case. In fact, with the Reeds, it appears that when the decision to move was made, the whole clan packed up and went. And even when some loved ones stay behind, they somehow knew where their family was, out in the great expanse of the new territories.
