John Quincy Adams was the sixth president of the United States, from 1825 to 1829. He was born in Braintree, now known as Quincy, Massachusetts in 1767. He viewed the Battle of Bunker Hill on top of Penn's Hill, a hill nearby his home. He often traveled with his father, John Adams, on his many diplomatic missions and at fourteen, he became the private secretary of the American emissary in Saint Petersburg. In 1787 he graduated from Harvard and became a lawyer in the bar in 1790. He was also an ambassador to the Netherlands, Britain, Berlin, and Portugal.
Being so, he was elected as a Massachusetts opponent of change in the United States Senate in 1803. However, three years later, the other New England Federalists became outraged when they found out that John Quincy Adams was supporting Jefferson, and he lost his seat in 1808.
In 1809 he became ambassador to Russia; became a member of the commission to negotiate peace with Great Britain, and from 1815 to 1817, he was an ambassador to Great Britain. As a profound secretary of state under President James Monroe, John Quincy Adams negotiated with Spain over American occupation of Florida. Adams also wrote a whole lot of the 'Monroe Doctrine' (1823). In 1824 he won the presidential election against Andrew Jackson by a close vote at the House of Representatives.
John Quincy Adams was an ineffective president, and at the next election,
1828, he ran against Andrew Jackson again, and this time he lost. In 1831, he was
admitted to the United States House of Representatives. For the remainder of his
life he was a major player in the anti-slavery movement, and in 1841, he
successfully defended the slaves from the slave ship Amistad. He had a stroke and
died two days later.
