" From The Shores Of Maryland To The Plains Of Texas"
Our story begins about 1715, when the teenaged indentured servant, Josias
Hendon, came to America. He
and his brother, Richard, settled in what is now Baltimore County, Maryland.
They would both become successful planters in the Gunpowder River region of
Maryland. Josias died in 1738; Richard in 1768. Many of their descendants
migrated to the Carolinas. The end of the century saw Hendons in Georgia and
Alabama. Hendons were in Mississippi and Tennessee by the mid 1800's. Josias
Hendon's great great grandson, William Lafayette Hendon, married Mary Caroline
Walker in Alabama (1858). Their
oldest son, Erastus Lafayette Hendon married Francis Rosella Walker in Holmes
County, Mississippi(1880). William and Erastus moved their families to Texas
in the late 1880's. After a few years in Limestone County, William relocated
to Henderson County; Erastus went to Knox
County. Erastus and Rosella had the following children: Addie(1881),
Claudie(1884), Tom(1886), Minnie(1889), Archie(1893), Barney(1897), and
Bert(1899). Erastus died in 1931 and Rosella in 1943. Some Hendons
resided in Knox County until the 1940's.
