Being wise or knowledgeable is generally regarded as a
strong personality characteristic. Many have spent years acquiring
knowledge from university classes, teachers, parents, and from reading.
Learning through these ways is a worthwhile endeavor, but this
learning produces worldly knowledge. You might become wise in man's
eyes, but real wisdom comes only from God. Real wisdom is knowing what
is pleasing to God and implementing it into your life. Here lies a BIG
dilemma. No one can be pleasing to God on his own. The only way to be
wise, or righteous, in God's eyes is through the saving grace of Jesus Christ. His death and resurrection paid the penalty for all man's sin. Anything you have ever
done wrong or ever will do wrong in the future (even if it's just
thinking a mean thought) will be counted against you unless by faith you
accept God's free gift of salvation through Jesus Christ.
"This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all
who believe. There is no difference, for all have sinned and fall short
of the glory of God, and are justified freely by His grace through the
redemption that came by Christ Jesus." Romans 3:22-23
If you have never accepted Christ into your life to receive this free
gift of grace, this must be done before you can ever hope to be wise.
Simply admit to God that there is no way you can ever be perfectly good
on your own. Ask Jesus to come into your heart and to forgive you of your sins by faith. He will! You can rejoice as a child of God. By praying this
and believing you have become part of God's family. Now you can know fear! (If you prayed this prayer just now, please let me know.)
"The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge,
At first it might seem contradictory to fear God when you know all your
sins are forgiven. It really isn't. You must fear God first because this
is to have reverence for him. He is holy, righteous, and just. When we
fear him we recognize that we can never be these things except through
his grace.
"Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with
God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by
faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we rejoice in the hope
of the glory of God." Romans 5:1-2
Now that you fear God, you only need to ask for wisdom. The
good news is
that he promises to give wisdom to anyone who asks!
"If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives
generously to
all without finding fault, and it will be given to him"
James 1:5
But when you ask, be sure to ask with the complete
belief that God will
do what he promises.
"But when he asks,
he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts
is like a wave of
the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That man should
not think he will
receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded
man, unstable in
all he does." James 1:6-8
The best place to begin receiving
God's promise for wisdom is the Bible.
The Book of Proverbs is literally
filled with information on what it means
to be wise. Ask the Holy Spirit
to reveal God's wisdom through his Word.
He will! God loves answering
prayers like this.
Here's an "If you...then you will" that God
will surely honor.
but fools despise wisdom and discipline." Prov. 1:7
Now that you know how to begin to become wise, try reading one chapter of proverbs each night. In one month you will have finished the book. Don't forget to ask God to help!
