I am trying to find out who was this Byington mentioned in the book "Lincoln at Gettysburg"
HOW LINCOLN LEARNED ABOUT GETTYSBURG
("Lincoln at Gettysburg"by William E. Barton, Peter Smith, 1950, New York p. 22)
"The clock in the War Department struck twelve, and announced the birth of the fourth of July, in the year of our Lord, 1863.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
"Seldom had official Washington been more sadly eager for news. The War Department knew nothing except what appeared in the Washington papers, and that was obtained from the newspapers either of Philadelphia of of New York.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
"But just as the clock struck twelve, the telegraph instrument clicked. The message came from Hannover, Pennsylvania, and was addressed to the Secretary of the Navy. It announced that the sender of the message had been within sight and hearing of a
battle fought that day at or near Gettysburg; that he had left the field at half past six in the evening, and that at that hour everythig looked hopeful . The dispatch was signed "Byington."
"Who is Byington?"
"Secretary Welles replied, "Byington is the editor and proprietor of a weekly paper in Norwalk, Connecticut. He sometimes is employed by the New York Tribune. Doubtless that newspaper has sent him to report the battle. He is an active and stirrin
man, and is reliabble. The telegram may be depended upon."
___________
My line of Byington came from Elmira, New York. My grand father emigrated to Brazil around 1890.
Someone sent this book to my father and we are cuious to learn who this man was. Perhaps with your experience in genealogy research you can find out. Good Luck! Maria E. B. Byington

I have been searching for several months to further the information given to me by other family members. I have gone back to the year 1608 in St. Dunstan, England which is on the outer skirts of London. I think it is near Kent. It was once a village ou
side the city gates of London.

Where are you from?: New York City | Surname search: STEINBERG | Search location: Czech-Hungary-Romania |
Search timeframe: 1400-present |
Comments:
The Steinbergs (Leviim)(Jewish origin) from the Carpathian Mountain area (Czechoslavakia-Hungary-Romania) seem to be all related. They are descendants of Rabbi David Segal HaLevi known as the "TaZ" (The hebrew initials of his famous book). TaZ was born 15
6 and died 1667. One of the TaZ' sons seemed to have moved to this area and started the Steinberg line. It has been about 300 years since the Steinberg line started and it is very possible that there are many Steinbergs from Russia and Poland that are rel
ted. However, so far, it appears that most of the Polish Steinbergs are Yisroel and not Levi. For an explanation of the 3 male jewish "caste" of Kohen(im), Levi(im), and Yisroel(im) see my website.

Found your excellent site from researching Martha
Ellington Motley of Pittsylvania County. My family is from Mocksville, NC about 120 miles from Pittsylvania County, VA. Family members reported losing contact with relatives in Pittsylvania County back in the 1920s. I am looking for the link. Oldest relia
ly documented NC relative is Horatio Motley, 1797-1883, wife Nancy, 1803-1878.
Any info on Davie County Motleys greatly appreciated.
