I am searching for information on my Great Grandparents,
John P. BURKS (b. 1846, d. 1911) and Frances Maria (Sis)
RICHARDSON Burks (b. 1848, d. 1899).   I remember my Dad
telling old tales of how life was in the wilds around
Bigelow, Perry County, Arkansas back when there were still
panthers in the woods and people traveled on horseback.
Thanks,
Bob

I am trying to find any information about John B. Dry and wife Nancy ?  My
main concern now is Nancy last name.  John was born in Panola County Ms.
Family history says that his sister, Minda Dry married Charlie Hawkins a
full blooded Cherokee, Charlie died young leaving Minda and 2 small
children, his family wanted to take the girls from her and raise them as
Cherokee so in the middle of the night the Dry family packed up and moved
from Panola County Ms to Perry County Ar.  That is where most of them died.
John B. was shot by the 'revenuers' in 1921, this is confirmed by
newspaper accounts.  But there is no record, that I can find, of Nancy's
last name.  I believe her death date  to be October, 1918.  If anyone could
tell me where to look for more information on this marriage, I would be
'beholdin'.  I have checked the Perry county court house, Saline Court
house, and Panola County Court house.  I have lots of info on John B's
ancestors and descendents but nothing at all on Nancy,     Thanks so much,
Donna

In Mar 1913 John Davis remarried Lillie Grace FERGUSON in Perry County, AR. He
has his son Charley with him. WHAT HAPPENED TO CLEMMIE HOARD ? Is it possible

Subject: OLIVER CLIFTON BARLOW AND MABLE CATHERINE RUSSELL

Date: Thu, 30 Jul 1998 21:14:45 -0700

My grandparents were Oliver Clifton Barlow and Mable Catherine Russell Barlow. They retired to Houston, Perry CO, Ar in the early 1950's and Grandpa built a house just across the bridge on the Fourche Lafave River...which is still there.

Grandma died in 1954 and Grandpa in 1957. My mother and father, along with my brother and I lived with them part of the time...Daddy was Robert Edward Barlow, and he taught school in Bigelow, I think in 1955. .

Grandma and Grandpa were members of the Methodist Church, but I'm not sure of the particular church..just that it would be in Perry CO..

Grandpa's death was unexpected, due to an automobile accident, and the family home was left vacant for a time.. During that time, the trunk of family photos and the collection of books Grandfather owned, disappeared. My mother and father divorced in 1956, and we removed to California and only knew our father by way of letters. He quit writing in 1967 and in 1977, I learned he had died in Dec of 1967..

I have only a few pictures of my father and grandparents...and have learned quite a bit of my family thru genealogy. Several times, I have written to the Perry Co School System in search of information of my father, but have never received an answer. Does anyone know of the Barlows or remember my father teaching them? I'm hungry for any information I can get about them..

My mother told me that my grandparents met in the Phillipine Islands in the 1920's where they were missionary teachers..I thought perhaps the Church might have an answer to how they came to be in the Phillipines....

Please do not hesitate to write if you have even a smidgen of information..other than the location of the home...I've been there numerous times...as I live just south of Little Rock... Thanks so much...susan http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Ridge/3145.

Subject: Perry Country Query

Date: Fri, 06 Feb 1998 15:13:33 -0600

I am looking for any information (history, ancestors on the MOORE side, cousins) on the MOORE family of James David MOORE and Emma Francis CAMP.

When did James David MOORE move to Arkansas, and Perry County in particular? Did he move with his parents and rest of his brothers and sisters or did he come as an adult?

I know he married Emma Francis CAMP on 4 Sep 1883 in Pulaski Co., Ark. I know he taught school in Perryville and he died 20 Sep 1905 in Perryville Ark. But I really know little else about him.

I am also interested in ANY family history about these MOORE's. I know I have a cousin or two in Perry Co. - There is/was a guy nicknamed "Moose", as well as an R.E.

To give a hint to others who are searching, this is the line through my parents...

I know that his parents, Charles MOORE (b 1804/5 in Ireland) and Ann (b. 1810/11 in Ireland) had at least 6 children:

Mary MOORE b. 1829/30 in England

Ann MOORE b. 1833/1834 in Wisconsin

Mary Ann MOORE b. 1836/1837 in Wisconsin

Charles MOORE b. 1839/1840 in Wisconsin

Nelly MOORE b. 1842/1843 in Wisconsin

James David MOORE b. 22 Dec 1855 in Portage City, Wisconsin.

I think that at the time of the census (1860, I believe - the document is at home and I'm not), all children but James (too young) and Mary (too old) were in school, and their place of residence was Portage City, Wis.

James David MOORE is my G-gandfather. James David MOORE m. Emma Francis CAMP 4 Sep 1883 in Pulaski Co., Ark. their children were

Yielding, my father’s ansestors back to Richard Yielding 1768/1864 who married Milly Mills in 188 in Rutherford N. Carolina. My Great grandfather Elias Elijah James Yielding came with the tember industry to Perry co. buying property on Wye mountain and Oakgroave communities. He and Mr. Muncie each donated equal land for the Oak Grove cemetery. My grandfather James Wesley Yielding and Zella Lee Edmondson bought land adjoining the Oak Grove cematary. The home still stands that Jim, as he was called and Zella built . After Jim’s untimely death in 1922 due to a logging accident, Grandmother Zella married Author Kelly a OakGrove school teacher, who became the Perry CO surveyor for many years. I am stumped as to what my Great grandmothers madden name was . All I have is Nancy Ann Yielding, born Jan 4 1856 and died April 16, 1911 and is buried in OakGrove cemetary. She is reported to be full blood Indian, Cherokee or Chactaw. Census records of 1910 in Perry co. have her place of birth in Miss. If anyone can help with this information I would Greatly Apprecoate it. I also have information on the Williams Junction Williams as they are my childrens father's family. Leola Marlene Yielding McCormick

Does any researcher connect to Mabin Price (son of Aaron Price) born in what is now Perry Co, about 1833? Who was his mother? Aaron's second wife was Jane Waller. We do not know the mother of Aaron's oldest children, Eliza born abt 1832 married Henry Cook, secondly married to Benoni DuBoise, lawyer and surveyor, Mabin as above we are not sure what happened to him but think we have found him in CA in the 1860' - 70's. Malinda married Thomas Brandon then Dr. Wm. Davis Hill Creasy. My grandfather James Price's mother was Jane Waller. He married Harriet Smith daug. of Anna Runnels Smith Hines. Does any one have these families?

Would love to hear from you. Lou Verne Price Landry

Date: Tue, 8 Jul 97 02:43:35 +0000

I'm researching the surnames Ussery, Hutto and Windle. George Washington Ussery b. 11/23/1861 married to Alice Maybelle Hutto b. 3/15/1871 were my ggrandparents. They lived in and around Perry County. George was 1/4 Cherokee and owned a store he purchased with $200 he got from the government in lieu of land in Oklahoma. Alice was born in Mississippi and may have come to Arkansas during the Civil War. I believe her parents may have been Moses Hutto and Zantipper Wheary. I've been told (but have not been able to verify) that Moses was fleeing the war and if the army caught him he would have been killed. Zantipper drove a covered wagon with the children while Moses followed on foot in the woods, hiding from the troops. At night when the wagon stopped he would sneak into camp and then sneak out again before daylight. Moses is found on the 1880 census in Lee, Ark.

Am looking for information pertaining to Robert Hume Moore and his spouse Lottie G. _____ (maiden name unknown. Known to have resided in Thornburg. He died in November 1960 and is buried in the Thornburg Cemetery. Supposibly, Lottie G. ____ (maiden name unknown) was from the area. My great - grandfather had been born in Virginia and had come to Arkansas via a long circuitous route. Nevertheless, I'm puzzled about Lottie as she was not buried w/my great-grandfather. I speculate that her age was 10 - 20 years younger than my great-grandfather. He was born in 1896. I suspect she may have been born ca. 1906 - 1916, leaving it possible that she still survives.

Subject: MEESE, LEE/LEA, NELSON, WOMACK, COTHREN, TALLEY, PRUITT in Perry County.

Date: Fri, 21 Mar 97 11:54:50 +0000

I am researching the names MEESE, LEE/LEA, NELSON, WOMACK, COTHREN, TALLEY, PRUITT in Perry County. My GreatGrandfather was Nineon (Nin) LEE/LEA and he moved to Perry County, sometime in the 1860's or 70's from Knox County, TN, with wife #1 Joanna and children John and Sarah. He later married Sarah Lunsford and I don't believe they had children. He then married my Great Grandmother, Melissa C. NELSON in 1900. They had 4 children:

Nancy J. (my grandmother) b. Dec. 1900,

Jake

Roxie

Bertie L.

Nineon had a brother ,Jacob LEE/LEA, who also came to Perry County and had a big family.

Melissa had sisters, Alma (or Almer) NELSON who married Joe COTHREN, and Rhoda who may have married Robert ZIMMER (not sure on this yet), and another sister called Dink. Also may have had brothers George NELSON and Virgil NELSON. The Nelsons came from AL and some of them moved to TX, but not sure what part.

My gggrandfather Philip MEESE also came to Perry County around 1870's with his son Charles MEESE. It is unclear how many times Charles married, but the first wife we have info on is Eliza SCHOTT, and they had a son Phillip MEESE. He later married Lydia D. WOMACK (my ggrandmother, daughter of James WOMACK and ?) and together they had:

James Herman (my grandpa)

Noah

George

(They also a baby that died and we think that Lydia may have died in childbirth). Charles homesteaded some land in Perry County which later became known as "MEESE Bend". Grandpa Charles also helped to build the Antioch Church in Perry County. To make matters a little more interesting, brothers married sisters:

Herman MEESE to Nancy J. LEE

George MEESE to Bertie L. LEE.

The families stayed in Perry County until 1937 when they moved to MO. If any of this sounds familiar to anyone please contact me so that we can trade info and maybe find out a little more about these families.

Melissa NELSON - LEE, after the death of Nin LEE, married Anderson TALLEY. They had one son Calvin. They then divorced, (and he married Bessie COTHREN, her niece), and she then married Virgil TALLEY and had 2 more daughters, Ellen and Margie.

Thanks, Cathy Stanfield

I am trying to locate info on Allen EMMONS that was listed in the 1860 Perry Co,ARK census. I believe he is the ALLEN EMMONS of Floyd co,IN in 1850. Haven't seen the census yet but there was a John EMMONS who was from Floyd Co,IN also in the 1860 Perry Co,ARK census and it is him.

I am trying to locate Allen's place of death in the hopes of learning more about his parents, who seem to have disappeared from Floyd Co,IN. Hoping to prove that Allen's sister, Sally, is indeed his sister, and she married SARLES. I did find Allen EMMONS in the land sale archive in 1880's in Logan Co,ARk. So I don't really know how long he stayed in Perry Co,ARK.
