The obituary for Thomas Cochran, the son, says that Timothy Cochran died in Ireland just before Thomas came to the United States, with his mother and brothers and sisters.

Michael Cochran, who lived in Daviess County in 1850-1860, "came to this country with his brothers after a rebellion in Ireland in the 1830's". His brothers' names are not listed, but Timothy may be a relative. There is a William listed with Michael in the 1840 and 1850 census of Daviess County. That may be another brother. Michael became a citizen in Madison County, Ohio, in 1837, and died in Knox County, Indiana, after 1880. This information is found in the 1988 History of Knox County, Indiana.

Among others were the following proceedings to wit; be it remembered that on the 29th day of September in the year aforesaid Michael Cochran, a native of Ireland, appeared in open court and produced a certificate from the Court of Common Pleas of Franklin County, State of Ohio, under the seal of said Court, by which it appears that the said Michael Cochran had appeared at the September session A.D. 1837 of said Court, and have then and there, declared on oath his intention to become a citizen of the United States - and it appearing to the satisfaction of the Court that the same Michael Cochran during the same term of two years, had behaved as a man of good moral character, attached to the Constitution of the United States, and well disposed to the good order and happiness of the same, and therefore the said Michael Cochran, took the oath to support the Constitution of the United States and that he doth absolutely and entirely renounce and abjure all allegiance and fidelity to every sovereign prince, ptentate, state or sovereignity whatever, and particularly to the Queen of Great Britain and Ireland.

The death certificate of William Cochran in Daviess County gives as his father and mother, Timothy Cochran and Bridget Cochran. Perhaps her maiden name was unknown or she is a Cochran also. Thomas' death certificate gives the same. Thomas' obituary says Bridget was a widow at her immigration with sons and daughters.

The 1900 Census Entries for sons, William and Thomas, give 1830 as the date for immigration. The 1910 Census for Thomas gives 1832.

Bridget may have lived in Clark, Franklin, or Madison County, Ohio, in the 1840 Census. Michael Cochran became a citizen there. On John Cochran's land grant he was said to be from Clark County, Ohio. It was definitely Ohio, according to Thomas' obituary.

Bridget lived with son, John, in 1850 Census; John's first wife is dead. Bridget lived with son Thomas during the 1860 and 1870 census. She seems to have died between 1870 and 1880.

John Cochran's 2nd wife appears in the 1870 Census living alone next door to her brother, Thomas Odell. John Cochran and their daughter, Ann, do not appear. They have both died. John Cochran in 1867. Mary Cochran, John's daughter, has already married Francis Zinkan.

William Cochran Dead. Aged Farmer Dies Suddenly at His Home South of the City. Eighty two Years of Age. William Cochran, the aged farmer whose home has been southeast of the city for a number of years died from an attack of heart failure at his home at 6 o'clock in the morning. Mr. Cochran's death was sudden. Although he had been complaining during the winter, his condition was not thought serious at any time. He was in the city a few days ago and Wednesday spent the day with his son, Thomas Cochran, apparently in the best of health and in good spirits. Relatives did not know of his condition until they saw him in a dying condition. Mr. Cochran was eighty two years of age and a widely known citizen of the county. He was a democrat in politics. He leaves two brothers, Thomas Cochran of this county, and Timothy Cochran of Buffalo, New York. His children are: Mrs. Anna Clarissy of Chicago, Mrs. Alice Colvin, Mrs. Mary J. Robinson, Mrs. Rose Duffy, Miss Lizzie Cochran, Thomas, John and Joseph Cochran, of this city.

William Cochran, one of the best known farmers in the southern part of Daviess County, died at 5 o'clock Thursday morning at his farm five miles southeast of Washington. His death was quick. Wednesday he was able to be up and his death is in the nature of a surprise, although he was failing from advanced age. Mr. Cochran was thrifty and was a hard worker. At his death he owned one of the best farms in the neighborhood. There are about 160 acres in the farm. He was a Catholic and a Democrat. Mr. Cochran leaves a large family of children: John of this city; Joseph and Thomas of Washington township; William of Indianapolis; Miss Kate Cochran of Indianapolis; Mrs. Alice Colvin of Corning; Mrs. Rose Duffy and Mrs. Mary J. Robinson of this city; Mrs. Annie Clarissy of Chicago, and Miss Lizzie Cochran of Washington township, and a brother, Timothy of Buffalo, New York, and also a brother, Thomas of Montgomery.

Catharine Burns and James Burns may be brother and sister. They seem to be living with John and Ann Coffey in 1850, and have the Coffey surname in the census records. James is listed as James Burns in the 1860 census records, but still living with John and Ann Coffey and Margaret Fitzsimmons. Catharine is listed as Catharine Cochran, the wife of William Cochran in the 1860 census records.

There was an Ann Burns who married John Coffey in 1848 in Parke County. This may be the Ann and John Coffey in Daviess County in 1850 and 1860. The Wabash and Erie Canal, of which John was a contractor, went through Parke, then to Daviess County. Ann Burns may have been a widow.

Washington Democrat. Washington, Daviess County, Indiana. Tuesday, April 8, 1913. Thomas Cochran, eighty-five years old, one of the oldest and most highly respected farmers of Barr Township, died Saturday. Old age and a gradually wearing out of the constitution is said to have been the cause of his death. Mr. Cochran had lived on the farm, where he died, for the last sixty years. He was a native of Ireland and came to the United States with other members of his family just after the death of their father. They first located in Ohio. After remaining there for two years they came to Indiana and settled in Barr Township. In 1863 he married Miss Mary Doyle. She has been dead for two years. Eight children were born to the union, six of whom are still living. They are: Mrs. Agnes Donnelly, Harrison township; John Cochran, Indianapolis; Frank Cochran, Washington State; Thomas Cochran, Washington; and Mollie and William Doyle who live at home. A brother, Timothy Cochran, lives in New York City. The body was buried Monday from St. Peter's church at Montgomery.

Thomas Cochran, who was a highly respected and esteemed retired farmer of Barr township, passed away Saturday after a brief illness. Senility caused his death. Born in Ireland eighty-five years ago, January 1, Mr Cochran came to America with his mother and brothers and sisters shortly after the death of his father. The family located in Ohio where the members remained a few years. Later they came to Daviess county and settled on what is now known as the John Billings farm. Mr. Cochran died on the farm where he had lived the last sixty years. He married Miss Mary Doyle in 1863, and she preceeded him to the great beyond two years ago. Six of their eight children are living: Mrs. Agnes Donnally of Harrison township; John of Indianapolis; Frank of Washington State; Thomas of Washington; and Mollie and William who live at home. He also leaves one brother, Timothy, of New York City. Mr. Cochran was a devout Catholic and a staunch democrat. Funeral services Monday morning from St Peter's Church at Montgomery were largely attended. Burial was in St Peter's Cemetery.

Thomas lived with his brother, John, in the 1850 census.

Washington Herald. Washington, Daviess County, Indiana. April 10, 1911. Mother of Local Man Passes Away. Mrs. Thomas Cochran of Barr Township Buried Today at Montgomery. Mrs. Thomas Cochran, a prominent and respected woman of Barr township, died at her home about three miles south west of Montgomery Saturday evening at 7:30 o'clock, the immediate cause of her death being a tumor. Besides her husband, who is upward of eighty years old and serously ill, Mrs. Cochran is survived by four sons and two daughters. Thomas Cochran, a son, lives in this city and is the well known custodian of the K.of C. Building. Mrs Cochran was seventy five years old. Her maiden name was Doyle. Burial was in St. Peters cemetery Monday morning, following services from St Peters church of Montgomery. Mrs. Cochran was a member of St Peters church.

Washington Democrat. Washington, Daviess County, Indiana. April 14, 1911. Montgomery. The funeral of Mrs. Thomas Cochran which took place Monday after a Requiem High Mass at St. Peter's church, was very largely attended, which goes to show that the aged woman was respected by all who knew her.

Mrs. Mary Zinkan, wife of Frank Zinkan, and the mother of a large family well known in Washington, passed away at 4:45 o'clock Wednesday afternoon at the Zinkan home at the corner of East Fourth and Walnut streets. Paralysis was the cause of her death. She had been confined to her bed since July 1. Mrs Zinkan was seventy years old and was born Nov 8, 1845. She was a daughter of Mr & Mrs John Cochran, and was a native of this county. She was married to Frank Zinkan while a young woman, and the following children, born to this union survive her: Mrs. J.P. Molen and John Zinkan, Seattle, Washington; Mrs. Margaret Riley, city; Mrs. Frank Kidwell, Valdez, Alaska; Mrs M.B. Hopkins, Spokane, Washington; Thomas Zinkan, Mrs. E.L. Truelove, R.F. Zinkan, and A.F. Zinkan of Indianapolis; and Miss Mayme Zinkan, city. Mrs. Zinkan was a faithful member of St Simon's church for years, being loyal at all times in her devotionto the church and its principles. The funeral arrangements have not yet been made.

DAVIESS COUNTY, IN. WASHINGTON TWP. PAGE 807 FRANCIS Zinkan was born near Washington, Daviess Co., Ind., and is the seventh of ten children born to Philip and Anna B. (HUSFELD) Zinkan, born in Germany and died in this country in 1875 and 1884, at the age of seventy-two and seventy years respectively. Our subject was reared near Washington, and resided with his parents until twenty-one years of age, when he married Mary, daughter of John and Mary CORCORAN. She was born November 8, 1845. After his marriage, which occurred November 21,1864, Mr. Zinkan resumed farming, having purchased eighty acres of land in Harrison Township. He lived there about five years, and then traded his land for forty acres, a portion of his present farm of 260 acres. To him and his wife were born these children: Genevieve, born in 1865; Maggie, born in 1867; John, born in 1869; Thomas, born in 1871; Rosa, born in 1873; Catherine, born in 1875; Maurice (deceased), born in 1877; Nettie (deceased), born in 1880; Esther, born in 1882, and Austin, born in 1884. Mr. Zinkan cast his first vote for Gen. George B. MacClellan, and has always been a Democrat. In November, 1882, he was elected to the office of county commissioner, and held that office a term of three years; was re-elected in 1884, and is now serving in that capacity. Frank Zinkan, 80 years old, a retired farmer, the latter days of whose life were spent in the city of Washington, died unexpectedly at 4 o'clock Sunday afternoon at the Daviess County Hospital. Asthma complications caused his death. He had been ill since last Monday and was taken to the hospital shortly before noon Sunday. Born on the old Zinkan farm in southeastern Daviess County 80 years ago last October 8, Mr Zinkan was a lifelong resident of the county. His parents were Phillip and Anna Barbara Zinkan, pioneer residents of the county. The deceased married Mary Cochran sixty years ago; the ceremony being performed at St Simon's church in this city. Mrs. Zinkan died September 29, 1915. Mr. & Mrs. Zinkan became the parents of twelve children, two of whom, Maurice and Antoinette are now dead. They lived on a farm until Mr. Zinkan retired from farmwork and moved to Washington. The surviving children are: Mrs. Mary C. Molen of Seattle, Washington; Mrs. Katherine Hopkins of Spokane, Washington; Mrs. Rose Kidwell of Lincoln, Nebraska; Mrs. Esther Truelove of Ft Wayne, Indiana; Mrs. Mayme Jackman of Indianapolis; Mrs. Margaret Riley, city; Thomas Zinkan of Wesley, Ohio; John Zinkan who is now in Florida; Austin Zinkan of Schenectedy, New York; and Ray Zinkan of Indianapolis. Mr Zinkan was a member of a large family, the members of which attained places of high standing in their communities. Two brothers and one sister of the deceased are now the only members of this family now living. They are Michael Zinkan of Glendale, Mrs. Elizabeth Michaels of Montgomery, and Jacob Zinkan of Washington. Frank Zinkan was a member of St Simon's church and the Holy Name Society. The family desires that no flowers be sent.

Funeral rites for Mrs. Alice J. Colvin, 70, wife of Michael J. Colvin, who died yesterday afternoon at her home 426 Southeast Sixth Street, will be held at 9 o'clock Saturday morning in St Simon's Catholic church. Burial will follow in Glencoe Chapel cemetery. Mrs. Colvin's death was attributed to a complication of diseases. She had been seriously ill since March 18. She was born in Daviess County February 2, 1862 (Alice and Mary Jane, her sister, had their birthdates mixed up. The baptismal register shows the correct dates.), and passed all her life in and near Washington. Her parents were William and Katherine (Burns) Cochran. She was married to Mr. Colvin in 1887, and he survives her, with a son, Austin A., of Washington, a daughter, Mary K. Colvin, also of Washington, and the following brothers and sisters: William Cochran, Indianapolis; John and Joseph Cochran, and Mrs. John Duffy, and Mrs. Edward Clements, all of this city. Mrs. Colvin had a large number of friends in the city and county. She was an unassuming and steadfast woman, and in her quiet way she filled a place in the hearts of many friends who will miss her pleasant greeting, kind advice, and interest in their lives.

The Washington Indiana City Directory for 1917 lists Mary Robinson (widow of Dixon) living at 808 Jefferson Street with Hiram and Walter Robinson. She was listed with Dixon in the 1912 City Directory.

The 1900 Census gives her birthdate as June 1863, contrary to the year engraved on her tombstone, 1864. The baptismal register gives 1862, which is probably correct. The age given in her obiturary corresponds to 1862. Tombstone in St. John's Cemetery, Daviess County, Indiana, reads: Mary Jane Robinson, 1864-1924.

Deaths. Mary Jane Robinson. Washington lost one of its best esteemed women at 5:15 o'clock Thursday afternoon at which time Mrs. Mary Jane Robinson, aged sixty two years, died at her home, 808 Jefferson Street. She was the widow of Dixon Robinson, who died eleven years ago. Pneumonia caused Mrs. Robinson's death. She had been confined to her bed for the last ten days. Four weeks ago today, her son, William, was buried. Daughter of William Cochran, Mrs. Robinson was born in Veale township. She is survived by seven children: Mrs. Frank Meade, Indianapolis; Mrs. Harry Yeager, Indianapolis; Mrs. James Smith, Terre Haute; Mrs. Albert Evans, Mrs. Matt Sullivan, and Hiram Robinson, all of this city, and Walter of Terre Haute. The following brothers and sisters also survive her: Mrs. Allen Colvin, John, Thomas, and Joseph Cochran, Mrs. John Duffy and Mrs. Edward Clements, all of this city; William Cochran and Mrs. Katherine Lawrence both of Indianapolis. Mrs. Robinson was a member of St. Simon's Catholic church where funeral services will be held at 9 o'clock Saturday morning. Burial will be in St. John's cemetery.

Richard Robinson is Dead. Richard Robinson died at 7:15 o'clock Friday night at his home at 808 West Jefferson Street. He had complained of having stomach troubles for the last three years and for the last three months his condition had been much worse. Mr. Robinson was fifty seven years old. He was born in this city October 13, 1855, and was a son of Elias Robinson. He married Mary Jane Cochran when a young man and eight children were born, all of whom are living. They are: Mrs. Frank Meade of Bicknell; Mrs. Matt Sullivan, Mrs. Ethel Bergert, William, Edna, and Walter of this city; and Mrs. Mary [Mayme] Waggoner of Terre Haute. He is also survived by his mother, Mrs. Ellen Adams, two sisters, Mrs. Bertha Smith and Mrs. Richard Brown, city, and one brother, William Robinson of Garden City, Kansas. Mr. Robinson was a member of the Baptist Church and also belonged to the Loyal Americans. The funeral services will be held Sunday morning at 9:30 o'clock at the home on Jefferson Street and will be in charge of Rev. S.A. Hayworth, Baptist minister. Interment will be made in Oak Grove Cemetery. [son Hiram has been omitted; also sister Margaret B. Creamer].

Dixon Robinson is found in the 1860 Census for Daviess County, Washington Township. His name appeared to be Simon Robinson to the compiler of the WFT Index to the 1860 selected Census Index, but it is Dixon. He had three older brothers and three older sisters by the name of Robinson, and one older brother and one older sister by the name of Pulliam. He had two younger sisters by the name of Robinson; Elias had been married to Jane Bassett and Ellen had been married to Robert Pulliam. His name in the Probate appears to be Richard, or Dixon.

Mrs. Rose Ellen Duffy, 82, years old, life time Washington resident, died at 3:55am today at her home, 706 West Walnut street, after an illness of eight years. She had been seriously ill since December 29, 1952. Mrs Duffy was the daughter of William and Katherine (Burns) Corkran, and was born in Washington on January 4, 1871. She was married October 29, 1888, to John Duffy who survives. She was a member of St. Simon's church, and the Altar Society. In addition to her husband she leaves two children, Ursula Dillon and Harold Duffy, both of this city, and two grandchildren. Two children preceded her in death. Mrs Duffy was the last of her family. Funeral services will be held at 9am Saturday in St Simon's church and burial wil be in St John's cemetery. Friends may call at the Keller Mortuary. Members of the St Simon's Altar Society will have rosary services at the funeral home at 7:30pm Friday.

Mrs. Elizabeth Clements, age 65, wife of Edward Clements of 710 Center Street, died at the Daviess County Hospital at 12 o'clock noon Sunday, after a serious illness of only three days. Mrs. Clements had been an invalid for 15 years and death was attributed to a series of complications. The deceased was a native of Daviess County, having been born on November 1, 1875, the daughter of William and Catherine (Byrnes) Corcoran, both natives of Ireland. She was educated in the Daviess County schools and spent her entire life in the community. In January, 1908, whe was married to Mr. Clements and he survives along with one son, Roy Corcoran of Clinton, Indiana. Mrs. Clements was a member of St Simons church and of the Royal Neighbor Lodge. Brothers and sisters surviving are: Joe Corcoran of Washington, William Corcoran of Indianapolis, and Mrs. John Duffy of Washington. Funeral services will be held at 9 o'clock Tuesday morning at St Simons church with interment following in St Johns cemetery. The body will remain at the Keller Mortuary until the hour of the funeral where friends may call to pay their respects.

Francis Cochran worked for the the Great Northern Railroad as a machinest. According to my grandma he was a farmer at heart. He died October 1941. He was in the hospital for an unrelated operation when his heart quit.

Catherine Fanning Cochran (born May 3, 1883 Corning, Indiana) as a nurse during the Typhoid Epidemic of the early 1900's in Daviess County, Indiana. I have a copy of a newspaper obituary for Catherine Cochran. I am not sure what paper.

Dated November, 1975 FUNERAL FOR WOMAN WHO FOUGHT EPIDEMIC Washington, Ind. -- Services for Mrs. Catherine Cochran, 92, of Portland Ore., a former Daviess County resident who helped to save many lives here as a nurse during the typhiod epidemic of the early 1900's, were held Monday in Portland. Mrs. Cochran died on Tuesday of last week after becoming ill while on a visit to a brother,

James W. Fanning of Pasco, Wash. Surviving are a daughter, a son, one sister, Mrs. Leo Gootee of R. 5, Jasper, two brothers and several grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was a widow of Francis Cochran. A son Joseph, died earlier this month in Portland. Catherine Fanning's parents were: Francis Fanning born Cincinatti, Ohio and Margaret Ann Flanigan born January 7, 1853 in Oldenberg, Indiana.

Joseph Cochran died November, 1975 in Portland, Oregon. He married Bertha. They had seven children: Mary, Joe, Patty, Don, Barbara, Oscar, and Ozzie. I do not have birthdays for them.

Mary Teresa Cochran married Frank Anthony Suter September 17, 1938 in Portland, Oregon. They met on the ski slopes of Mt. Hood, Timberline Lodge, Oregon. They had six children: Richard Suter born March, 5, 1941 in Portland, Oregon. He married Ruth Benn. Uncle Rich works with computers in Washington D.C. Aunt Ruth is a Dr. in Education and is a Professor at the University of Pennsylvania. They have no children.

Ronald Joseph Suter born September 23, 1943 in San Francisco, Calif. (My

Dad). He

married Joan Louise East (born March 2, 1945 in San Jose, Calif.) June 11,

1966 in

Redwood City, Calif. Ron is a Captian for Northwest Airlines an flies DC9's.

He is also a retired Colonel in the Marine Corps. He flew A-6's in the

Vietnam War (1968-1969).

Joan was a Dental Assistant before she had children. They had three

children. Shannon Leigh Suter(ME) born March 17, 1970 in Kingsville, Texas.

Shannon married Lee Wallace Sloan August 15, 1992 in Keller, Texas. We have

a son Ronald David Sloan born June 4, 1998 in Stepenville, Texas. Paula Jean

Suter born October 7, 1973 in San Louis Obispo, California. Julie Kristine

Suter born May 26, 1975 in Arlington, Texas.

Kennith Suter born November 6, 1944 in San Francisco, Calif. He married Wendy

in 1969 in Redwood City, California. Uncle Ken owes his own Swimming Pool

business. He was in the Navy during the Vietnam War. Aunt Wendy was a

Dental Assistant for many years but sell real estate now. They have no

children.

John Suter was born April 30, 1949 in San Francisco, Calif. He married

Mary(born July

8, 1955) on August 10, 1973. Uncle John was in the Army. He was assigned to

Alaska

where he met and married my aunt Mary. They have three children. Esther

Diane Suter

born June 29, 1977. Tabatha Suter born October 26, 1978. and Zachary Scott

Suter born February 4, 1980. Uncle John has raced his standard size poodles

in the Ididarod dog sled race. Both he and Mary work at the Anchorage

Airport.

Christopher Suter was born March 30, 1954 in San Fancisco, Calif. He workes

at the

Sacramento Airport as a Janitor.

Sharon Suter was born May 15, 1958 in Redwood City, Calif. She married Mark

Quinsland( Born November 16, 1959). They have two children. Karlton James

Quinsland born May 7, 1991. Jane Elyse Quinsland born May 21, 1993.

John Cochran was born June 10, 1920 in Pasco, Washington. He married

Lillian. They

have six children: Kathy, Mike, Carol, Laurie, Danny and Eileen. I do not

have birthdays

Former Local Switchman Dies

Frank Joseph Clarisey, 59, former resident of this city, died yesterday at St. Anthony home in Lafayette, Indiana. He had been ill for the last two and one half years and seriously ill for three days before his death. Born April 3, 1879, in Washington, Mr. Clarisey was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Mathew Clarisey. He left this community about nineteen years ago. Mr. Clarisey was employed as a railway switchman. He was a member of the Catholic Church. Surviving are the following children: Matthew F. Clarisey, of Martinsville; Mrs. L.A. Gutsch, Mrs Leroy Smith and Mrs. Malcolm Garland of this city. He leaves a brother, Michael, and three sisters, Miss Kate Clarisey, Mrs. Edward Crumbo, and Mrs. Edward Cuddy all of Chicago. The body will be returned to Washington today and will remain at the Keller mortuary until the hour of the funeral. Services will be held Monday morning at 9 o'clock at St Mary's church, with burial in the Veale Creek cemetery.

Body of Former Resident Being Returned Here for Burial.

Frank Joseph Clarisey, 59, former local railroad switchman but gone from here for the past 19 years, died yesterday afternoon at the St. Anthony Home in Lafayette following a serious illness of three days. The body was to be returned here this afternoon and will be taken to the Keller Mortuary to remain until the hour of the funeral. Mr. Clarisey was born in Washington on April 3, 1879, and was a son of Mr. and Mrs. matthew Clarisey. He was a member of the Catholic church. Surviving are four children, Matthew F. Clarisey of Martinsville, Mrs. Lawrence A. Gutsch, Mrs. Leroy Smith, and Mrs Malcolm Garland, all of Washington. Brothers and sisters are Michael and Kate Clarisey, Mrs. Edward Crumbo, and Mrs. Edward Cuddy, all of Chicago. Funeral services are to be held Monday morning at 9 o'clock at St. Mary's Catholic church, with interment following in Veale Creek cemetery. Ed Keller will have charge of the funeral.

Alfred Davis Meade was the son of William and Delilah (Hayes) Meade, both of whom were natives of Maryland and early settlers in Washington township, Daviess county, Indiana.... By his first marriage six children were born to Alfred Davis Meade: James B., who was born on July 10, 1866, is a farmer in Harrison township; Minnie, who was born on December 26, 1867, was burned to death at the age of twenty-eight; Giles W., who was born June 19, 1871, died young, as did also Charles E., who was born April 19, 1873; Edward, who was born on January 9, 1875, is a farmer in Reeve township; Frank S., who was born on July 15, 1878, lives at Bicknell, Indiana. Shot Through Lung Six Days Ago; Still Living.

With a bullet hole through his left lung, very near the heart, inflicted in an attempt to end his life, Frank Meade, 46 years old, ex chief of police of Bicknell, Ind., has lived since Wednesday, although his condition was considered hopeless at the time of his admission to City Hospital. "I am just despondent and down and out," Meade told his daughter, Mrs Emma Moore, Bicknell, and his wife, when found more than an hour after he had fired the bullet from a revolver belonging to his son, F.C. Meade. Meade was chief of police at Bicknell during the term of Mayor Winter and his term of service expired Dec. 31, 1921.

Indianapolis, June 26. Frank Meade, 46, former chief of police of Bicknell, in in the city hospital here in a critical condition today as the result of a self-inflicted wound. He was found yesterday afternoon in a garage in the rear of his home by his wife and daughter, Mrs. Emma Moore, of Bicknell. He had shot himself through the left lung. Police who investigated attributed his act to despondency. "I am just despondent and down and out", Meade told police after he had been found by his wife and daughter. He was said to have been out of a job. He had gone to Hartford City Tuesday, driving a car borrowed from one of the boarders in his home. He returned Wednesday forenoon, but the family did not know of his return until he was found in the garage Wednesday afternoon. His wife said he had been worrying over his financial situation. His attempt at self destruction had been made with a .38 calibre automatic belonging to his son, F.C. Meade. The bullet was aimed at the heart, but barely missed the heart and passe on through the body. The shot would have been instantly fatal had the course of the bullet varied but slightly. The shot was not heard by members of the family. Note: Frank Meade was chief of police in Bicknell during the administration of Mayor Winter, his term expiring December 31, 1921. Later: - Meade's condition was said to be slightly improved at the hospital this afternoon.

Hiram Robinson dies following 3 week's illness. Funeral of B.& O. Employee to be Held Monday Afternoon. Hiram Robinson, 56, 615 S.W. First street died at the Daviess County Hospital at 5 o'clock Friday afternoon (March 1). He had been seriously ill for the last three weeks and submitted to an operation to relieve his condition. Mr. Robinson was an employee of the Baltimore and Ohio railway, where he was a crew foreman. He was a member of the Church of God, and the B. of R. T. (Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen). A Daviess county native, Mr. Robinson, was born Aug. 21, 1883. His parents were Richard and Mary Jane (Corchran) Robinson. He is survived by his wife Myrtle, whom he married June 26, 1920, and one son, Floyd J. Robinson, at home. Sullivan, of Washington. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 o'clock Monday afternoon at the Church of God, with the Rev. Thomas Hillenberg officiating. The body will be taken from the Gill funeral chapel to the residence this afternoon.

Mrs. Bertha Sullivan, 89, 808 Jefferson Street, died at 1:05 am today at the Daviess County Hospital. She had been ill since 1968, and seriously ill since November 20 of this year. Mrs. Sullivan was a lifetime resident of this community, and was educated in the Daviess County schools. Born July 4, 1885, to Dixon and Mary Jane (Cochran) Robinson, she married Matthew J. Sullivan, March 11, 1903, and he died December 12, 1940. Mrs. Sullivan was a member of St Simon's church. Surviving are one son, William C. Sullivan, city, one daughter, Mrs. O.D. (Helen) Fisher, North Vernon, three grandchildren, and ten great grandchildren. Three brothers and four sisters are deceased. Mrs. Sullivan was the last of her immediate family. The funeral will be held at 10 am Monday in St Simon's church with interment in St John's cemetery. Members of St Simon's parish, and friends, will pray a rosary at 8 pm Sunday at the Ed L. Lee mortuary. Friends may call after 7 pm today, at the Lee mortuary.

She was the daughter of Richard (Dixon) and Mary Jane (Cochran) Robinson and was born September 10, 1889 in Washington where she was educated. She was a member of the ladies auxiliary of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. She leaves her husband, Albert P. Evans, whom she married in 1914, three children, Paul F. Evans, Evansville; Mrs James (Pauline) Seidel, city, and Mrs. William (Mary Catherine) McMullen, Vincennes; 10 grandchildren, five great grandchildren and two sisters, Mrs. Bertha Sullivan, city, and Mrs Edna Yeager, Indianapolis, and one brother, Walter Robinson, city. Two children, Mrs Chester Wallace and Robert G. Evans preceded her in death, and two sisters and two brothers are dead. Funeral arrangements are incomplete. Friends may call at the Gill funeral home after 3pm Thursday.

Marion S. Burgett, aged thirty-three, son of S.H. Burgett, a well known citizen, was run over and instantly killed Thursday afternoon by a B.& O. Southwestern passenger train No. 2 as it pulled into the uptown depot at 1:30 o'clock. It appeared as though death was instantaneous, for immediately after the train had passed over his body, several ran to him, but he was already dead. Both feet of the unfortunate man were crushed and the bones which were exposed were clinging to his legs only by threads of flesh. His shoes were off and his clothing torn to pieces. A large dent in his hat which was found about fifty feet west of the body, showed where he had received an awful blow to the head. The marks in the center of the track showed that his body had been dragged over the ground for about fifty feet. No one, except possibly a travelling salesman who boarded train no. 2, the train that killed Burgett, saw the accident. The drummer was standing on the depot platform watching the approach of the train when he suddenly cried out: "There goes a man underneath the train!" Immediately a large crowd ran to the scene only to find Burgett's horribly crushed and mangled body. It was hard to identify the man at first, as he was lying on his face and his form and clothes were too badly disfigured for identification. Finally, Deputy Marshall Theodore Wallace expressed the opinion that the dead man was Marion Burgett, but the identification was not complete until his hat, which contained the initials, "M.S.B." was found. Raymond Burgett, a brother of the dead man, was standing on the depot platform when the accident occurred. He followed the crowd to the scene. "Who is it?", he asked. Just then some one was heard to say: "Yes, it is Marion Burgett, for here are the initials in his hat". "My God", cried young Burgett, "Is it Marion?", as he reeled backwards. The poor fellow turned ghostly pale and became so nervous that he could scarcely stand up. His grief was pitiful to see and a kind hearted old woman approached him saying, "Poor boy, it was God's will, and could not be helped," hoping to relieve his agony. It is the opinion of those who saw anything at all of the accident that Burgett threw himself under the train. Raymond Burgett, although he refused to say much about a talk he had with his brother about twenty minutes before the accident, finally said that Marion was out of work and had been for some time and that he did not know what he would do if he didn't find a job soon. Raymond says he told him to go home to his wife and not to worry so much about it, and it would make it easier for him. Another statement of the unfortunate man which was made while in conversation with Patrolman Edward Royse, just before he left the depot platform to his walk to death, and which will strengthen the views of those who think he committed suicide, was that he was out of a job and was thinking about going out of town to get one. In both instances he was talking about being out of employment and seemed to be greatly discouraged because of it. Michael Toohey, engineer on a yard engine, which was standing on the side track near the place where Burgett was killed says that he saw Burgett going down the track and that his head was hanging down on his breast like one in a deep study. Neither the engineer, nor the fireman, on train no. 2 saw the train hit the man. They blew the whistle for the station as usual. Burgett, after he had left the depot, went down the track to a point near west Second street and it was here that the train hit him. Here his hat was found, but his mangled body was dragged as far east as west First street. His shoes were found about twenty five feet west of his body. The entire train passed over his body, but it is thought only his feet were touched by the wheels, as they were mashed to a pulp, while other parts of his body were in a much better condition. A severe blow on the head, it is thought, killed him instantly. The hat, when found, had a large dent and hole on the left side, a little to the front and there was a great gash on the side of the head. It is believed that the force of the blow killed him before he was dragged beneath the train. A complete investigation of Burgett's injuries was made at the Gill undertaking establishment and revealed that the left arm was broken in two or three places, both feet were crushed, several ribs on the right side were crushed, his left jaw was broken, the scalp torn in different places and numerous minor bruises. Burgett, two years ago, married Ethel Robinson, and is survived by the wife and one daughter. He lived on Meridian street, and until several weeks ago was a bartender about the city. He was always a well dressed man and was well known. The funeral arrangements have not been made.

The funeral services for the late Marion Bergert were held Saturday morning at the residence of his father, S.H. Bergert, on north Fifth street. The Rev. J.M. Douglass, pastor of the First Presbyterian church, had charge and preached the funeral sermon. Burial was made in Oak Grove cemetery. The services were attended by many friends of the unfortunate young man, whose tragic end served to make the shock of his death all the harder. The inquest was conducted Friday before Squire Kelams and the testimony was all in after supper. The examination of witnesses was started in the afternoon but it was impossible to reach several of them until night. The verdict of the acting coroner will be that Bergert came to his death by being run over by B.&O. Southwestern train #2 and that it was probably an accident. Although many believe Bergert's death was suicide there was an absence of testimony at the inquest to support this theory. Bergert was a bright young man and studied law for a while in the offices of Ogdon & Inman. He was an apt pupil and had made much progress when he abandoned his determination to become a lawyer. He was a man of fine appearance and had acquired a good education. Beyond doubt there was a brilliant future before him had he continued the study of law.

Marion Bergert, one of the best known men about town, was killed by the east bound passenger train No. 2 on the B.& O. Southwestern railway west of the depot Thursday afternoon. Twenty minutes before the accident, or suicide, Marion Bergert talked with his brother, Raymond, near Main and east Third streets. During the conversation Marion complained because he had been out of employment for a long time, and said that he did not know what would become of himself and family unless he could soon procure employment. The two brothers separated, Raymond Bergert going to the B.& O. Southwestern depot. He was standing upon the platform when the suicide, or accident, occurred. It seems that Marion Bergert, a while after his converstion with his brother on Main street, started west. Near the depot he met Policeman Ed Royce, to whom he also complained of his unfortunate condition, being out of employment and unable to get work. Bergert walked west along the railway. He passed the switch engine standing on a siding near the Elswick hotel, and Michael Toohey, the engineer, says he walked with head down as he passed the engine. According to the only eye witness to the tragedy, C.S. Welsh, a travelling salesman for the Harriet Dunley Supply Company of Indianapolis, Bergert either fell, or deliberately threw himself under the wheels of the train as it was pulling into the depot. Bergert did not fall upon the track in front of the locomotive. He dropped to the track between the tender and the mail coach, and death was instantaneous. Both his feet were cut off, his left arm was broken and his head and neck were badly bruised. His coat was torn completely off, but his body was not badly mangled. The body was taken to the Gill undertaking establishment where it was prepared for burial. Marion Bergert was twenty-six years old and was a son of H.S. Bergert, a retired farmer who is very ill at his home in this city. The young man was united in marriage to a daughter of Richard Robinson a year ago last August. Besides a wife he leaves an infant daughter. They live on north Meridian street. His father gave Marion a house and lot when he was married. This the young man sold and the proceeds from the sale were soon gone. Marion Bergert, some years ago, had an ambition to become a lawyer, and for some time read law in the office of Ogdon & Inman. During recent years he had not been regularly employed anywhere. He was a fine looking young man, and a perfect dresser. He had been despondent for some days and this gives strength to the theory that he committed suicide, but it may be that he stumbled and fell.

Wrecking of Hamer Cemetery Angers Writer

Dear Sir:

I noticed in my Tribune the wrecking of the Hamer Cemetery at Spring Mill Park. I hated to read that account as I have one brother and two sisters buried there. My grandfather, Thomas Hamer and his brother, Hugh, ran that mill before there were any railroads. My mother was born and raised in the Thomas L. Hamer home. All my people on my mother's side are buried in the Hamer Cemetery. My father was a stone mason and made the markers for my brother and my two sisters' graves. My mother was 14 years old when they built the old O. & M. Railroad. She said the men building the road would come down to the Hamer Cave to get water for the men working on the track. I noticed where Hugh Hamer's marker was broken in two different places. I can't think of anyone that would be mean enough to go into any cemetery and destroy markers like they did there. I only hope that the law can run them down. I am enclosing 25 cents for postage. Please send me two of last week's Tribunes, as I want to send them to my people who live out of town. Thank you.

Albert P. Evans, 87, 211 Front Street, died at the Crestview Nursing Home in Vincennes (IN) at 4:40PM Saturday. He had been in failing health for several years and seriously ill for one week. Born October 15, 1880, in Mitchell, Indiana, he was the son of Elijah and Angeline (Hamer) Evans. His wife, Ethel Bernadette (Robinson) Evans preceded him in death on August 6, 1958. Mr. Evans was a brakeman on the B.&O. Railroad and was a member of the First Methodist Church, Eagles Lodge, and the Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen. He was educated in the Mitchell (IN) schools. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. James (Pauline) Seidel, Washington; Mrs William (Mary Catherine) McMullen, Vincennes; one son, Paul F. William D. Robinson, aged thirty two years, died this morning at the state hospital near Evansville, Indiana. He had been a patient there for the last year. The body, upon arrival in Washington tomorrow, will be taken to the home of George Remmel, 801 Jefferson Street. Robinson's widow is a daughter of Mr. Remmel. The deceased man was a native of Washington and formerly was employed as a machinist's helper at the local shops of the Baltimore and Ohio railroad company. In addition to his widow and three children, he leave his mother, Mrs. Sarah(!) Jane Robinson, two brothers and four sisters.

The Washington Indiana City Directory for 1917 lists William Robinson and his wife Cora as living at 815 Robinson St. He was a machinist at the B. & O. Shops.

Mrs. Cora Mae Loudermilk, 81, 910 Robinson St., died at the Washington Nursing Center at 7:45 am today. She had been ill for three years but death was unexpected. She was born Dec 22, 1892, daughter of George and Sarah Ellen (Burkhart) Remmel. Three husbands preceded her in death, William D. Robinson, Francis J. Williams, and Thornton Loudermilk. She was a member of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church. Surviving are four sons, Richard W. Robinson and Robert L. Williams, both of Washington, James A. Robinson, Muncie; and Eugene A. Robinson, Kansas City, Mo., 15 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren. One sister and two brothers have died. The funeral will be at 1:30 pm Thursday at the gill Funeral Home with the Rev. Arthur Friesen as minister and burial in Oak Grove Cemetery. Friends may call after 10am Wednesday.
