Sheba Benesole

August 1984 - November 1996

Susan and I put Sheba to sleep on November 4, 1996 at about 8:30pm EST. This was one of the most painful things I have ever had to take part in. Susan and I held Sheba while our vet ended Sheba's pain.

I put together this page to share Sheba's life and to remember her. I looked for a suitable quote to go with one of my favorite photos. I found several but I liked this first one best. I did take some liberties with the original text by John Cam Hobhouse about Lord Byron’s dog, Boatswain but the quote should help everyone understand our loss.

"Near this spot is remebered one who possessed Beauty without Vanity, Strength without Insolence, Courage without Ferocity, and all the Virtues of Man without his Vices. This praise, which would be unmeaning Flattery, if inscribed over human ashes, is but a just Tribute to the Memory of Sheba, a Dog."

"Dog. A kind of additional or subsidiary Deity designed to catch the overflow and surplus of the world’s worship." -- Ambrose Bierce

"The great pleasure of a dog is that you may make a fool of yourself with him and not only will he not scold you, but he will make a fool of himself too." -- Samuel Butler

Susan and I would love to hear from you
