Whenever possible I will add comments about the books as well. These will usually be based on my own reading of the book. Of course, if you have a favorite book that you would like me to add to this list, let me know and I'll do so. As with all of this site, I want it to be as helpful as possible to the guinea pig owner.

On to the Books!

The first section is books that I have personally read. These have comments from my personal perspective. I'm sure others would find the books I didn't particularly enjoy very good. So what you see below are IMHO information.

The Proper Care of Guinea Pigs: Peter Gurney / Published 1993 Read more about this title...; I, and many others, consider this to be the premiere book on guinea pig care. Peter is obviously deeply concerned with the cavy and it comes thru on every page of his book. Amazon now indicates a possible delay in delivery, possibly hasn't totally worked out the details with t.f.h. on ordering. It is possible, like Peter's Guinea Pig's Potion book, that it is only available in the United Kingdom. This single volume could easily make up all the library you would need for being a good guinea pig pet owner.
Your Guinea Pig : A Kid's Guide to Raising and Showing ~ Usually ships in 24 hours: Wanda L. Curran / Paperback / Published 1995; Wanda L. Curran / Paperback / Published 1997; This is my second book to check in, right after Peter Gurney's! Wanda has wonderful information about all aspects of guinea pig care. The book appears to have been written with the 4-H child in mind, so it includes breeding information as well as health care information. If Peter's book is, in fact, not available in the United States, then definitely get Wanda's book. While her book is a bit less conversational, it contains a wealth of information on proper care for your guinea pig.
Diseases of Domestic Guinea Pigs (Library of Veterinary Practice): V. C. G. Richardson / Paperback / Published 1996.; This is the standard veterinary reference for guinea pigs. The practitioner should have no trouble with it, and the dedicated amateur can find a lot of very helpful and useful information here. When I need to take one of my animals to the vet, I usually have my copy with me, with the suspected sections bookmarked.
The Guinea Pig : An Owner's Guide to a Happy Healthy Pet (Owner's Guide to a Happy, Healthy Pet) ~ Usually ships in 24 hours: Audrey Pavia / Hardcover / Published 1997; This is an excellent book, lots of cute pictures, and is the first book I've ever seen that actually recommends against the use of Cedar!
Guinea Pigs : A Complete Pet Owner's Manual ~ Usually ships in 24 hours: Katrin Behrend / Paperback / Published 1991.; A small and helpful book with a chapter on guinea pig language, good tips on handling etc. Many pictures of young animals.
Guinea Pigs ~ Ships in 2-3 days: Kay Ragland / Hardcover / Published 1981; This book's first half has to do with the many varieties, both breeds and colors, of the guinea pig. The balance of the book is about care and feeding. The photos are very nice, information is slim.
Guinea Pigs a Complete Introduction ~ Ships in 2-3 days: Margaret Elward / Paperback / Published 1987; This is a very good book, unfortunately it shows cedar being an acceptable bedding (note publication date). This book is a good guide to breeding and showing, again with many good pictures of the various breeds and colors. Has a good section on grooming for long haired breeds.
Step-By-Step Book About Guinea Pigs ~ Ships in 2-3 days: Anmarie Barrie / Paperback / Published 1990; This is a very short and useful introductory book, covers all the major topics enough to keep a new owner out of trouble, with the one exception that she shows cedar as an acceptable bedding. Good pictures of breeds and grooming for long haired breeds.
One Guinea Pig Is Not Enough ~ Usually ships in 24 hours: Kate Duke / Hardcover / Published 1998; This is a fun little counting book. Great pictures and funny story line, will please youngsters and piggie slaves alike.
I Love Guinea Pigs (Read and Wonder Books) ~ Usually ships in 24 hours: Dick King-Smith, Anita Jeram (Illustrator) / School & Library Binding / Published 1995; A loving tale of the author's life with guinea pigs, with information for a child on how to properly care for them. Told in a manner that doesn't command, but makes them think in terms of what they would do for themselves. Wonderful for young readers!
Anatomy of the Guinea Pig ~ Ships in 2-3 days: Gale Cooper, Alan L. Schiller / Hardcover / Published 1975.; A very detailed book on guinea pig anatomy, designed for the doctor, not the veterinarian. However, it can be used effectively by a veterinarian since it shows all the major structures of the guinea pig. It is in large format (about 10x12 inch), so takes up a lot of space.
Guinea Pigs (ASPCA Pet Care Guides for Kids) ~ Ships in 2-3 days: Mark Evans, Roger A. Caras / Hardcover / Published 1992.; This is a very nice book for children, has many wonderful illustrations and recommendations on proper care of the animal. This might make a very good first read for a child to see if s/he is serious about properly caring for their new pet.

The following books are also shown on the Amazon site, however, I have not read any of them. So I can't personally recommend them.

The Guinea Pig : How to Care for Them, Feed Them, and Understand Them (Family Pet Series) ~ Usually ships in 24 hours: Katrin Behrend, et al / Hardcover / Published 1997; I have read Katrin's paperback book "Guinea Pigs A Complete Pet Owner's Manual." This was a fairly good book. This update might fix some of the minor inconsistencies (like couldn't decide on water bottles or water bowls).
