M-100

The core of galaxy M 100 as seen by the Hubble Space Telescope. A spiral galaxy like our own Milky
Way. M 100 is one of the brightest in a rich galaxy grouping called the Virgo Cluster.

Andromeda

Our nearest galactic neighbor, Andromeda, is thought to look very similar to the Milky Way.

SOMBRERO

The nearby Sombrero galaxy (M 104) has hat-like features thanks to a prominent dust lane, halo of stars and globular clusters.

DINGLEOO

Hiding behind the gas, dust and stars of our Milky Way, Dwingeloo 1 wasn't discovered until 1994.

WHIRLPOOL

For the classic spiral galaxy, you need look no further than the Whirlpool, also known as M 51. The gravity from the smaller galaxy at right is thought to have created M 51's spiral.
