HENRY PROKOP
SOUTH ST. PAUL - Requiem mass for Henry Prokop, 76, of 236 Ninth Ave. S. was at St. Adalbert's Catholic church April 5 and interment at Calvary cemetery.
A resident of this area for 44 years. Mr. Prokop was a silver burnisher for Northern Pacific railroad for 22 years and retired in 1945. He died April 1 of heart ailment in Northern Pacific hospital.
He is survived by his wife Helen; a daughter, Mrs. Sidney Cramer of St. Paul; three sons, Casimer of South Bend, Ind., Roman and Andrew Prokop, both of St. Paul; a sister of Canada and 15 grandchildren.
Every day Joe Proskow looks down at the world.
It isn't that Joe feels superior to the rest of us. He merely occupies a
higher position in life.
Fifty-one years old and devoid of nerves. Joe washes windows on the 375-foot
First National Bank building, tallest regulation office structure in the
Northwest.
Swinging out into space with only two half-inch ropes between him and the
hard ground. Joe whistles merrily as he wipes dust and grime off windows.
"I used to be a coal miner, working 175 feet under ground," he says, nonchalntly
sponging a window, "but I got tired of that...no excitement."
Joe's been washing windows at the bank for 15 years. His apparent carefree
manner comes from deliberate inspection of his equipment each morning and
years of "thinking out every movement beforehand."
Joe doesn't let heights scare him. "Why should I be afraid," he grins, "I've
got insurance."
The only thing that frightens Joe are his nightmares.
"I don't know why, but I always dream I'm flying through space like Superman."
Two ropes and a six-inch ledge prevent Joe from becoming a part of the pavement
below. Wind gusts buffet Joe occasionally but he has learned to "ride them
like a sailor does the waves."
Silhouetted against the sky, Joe cleans a window in two minutes. His advice
for other window washers, "When the rop breaks don't waste time yelling,
just grab whatever's available."
Popular and friendly, Joe has numeous friends among office workers. He chats
with Era Huber, receptionist, before stepping outside a 28th floor window.
