Winthrop Harbor Community Guide
Community Overview
Winthrop Harbor is a village of about 6,300 45 miles north of downtown Chicago. Exclusively residential, many residents work in nearby towns including Waukegan and Zion. Recreational opportunities include the programs of the Zion Park District, and North Point Marina on Lake Michigan (701 North Point Dr., 847-746-2845) which provides facilities for boating and fishing in the Zion-Winthrop Harbor-Beach Park area and connects via hiking trails to the north unit of Illinois Beach State Park. The village also operates a 38-acre Village Park with facilities for baseball, volleyball, basketball and indoor recreation and meetings. Grade school-aged children attend district 1 schools, while Secondary students go to Zion-Benton Township High School, district 126. (See below for details on schools).
Transportation needs are served by area highways (I-94, I-90), and major local roads (U.S. 41, Rt. 173/Rosecrans Rd., Rt. 137/Sheridan Rd.). Commuter service to downtown is provided by Metra.
