Waukegan Community Guide
Community Overview
Waukegan is a town of about 70,000 39 miles north of downtown Chicago. Its location midway between Milwaukee and Chicago on Lake Michigan makes it a fairly major port. Many industries are located in Waukegan, including major employers such as Abbott and Baxter-Travenol Labs, Cherry Electric and Outboard Marine. Recreational and Cultural opportunities include the programs of the Park District and the Bowen Park Theater's performances. Unit district 60 (K-12) serves the community, and includes Waukegan East and West High Schools. (See below for details on schools).
Transportation needs are served by area highways (I-94) a few miles west, and major local roads (Lewis Ave., I-137/Sheridan Rd., Grand Ave.). Commuter service to downtown is provided by Metra. Travel time to the downtown Chicago station is about 65-75 minutes. Local bus service is available from PACE. The RTA Travel Info. Number is 1-800-972-7000.
