Shannon Family

James Shannon came to Tazewell Co probably from Amherst Co and appears on the 1783 Montgomery Co tithable list. He patented 135 acres (13 miles NE of Jeffersonville) on a branch of the Bluestone River in 1783, near Solomon STratton and Robert Lasley. After Indians raided Bluestone settlements in Crockett. In 1801, he deeded property to William Shannon and in 1810 to John Shannon (for value received). By 1810 he was taxed by Giles Co, having moved to Big Laurel Fork of the Guyandotte River, Wyoming Co. He and wife Sarah (Layne)? probably have these children:



1. William Shannon b. 1773, minister of Bailey Methodist Church, performed numerous marriages. He probably resided with son James in Laurence Co KY, 1850 William probably had these children:

c. Jannie Shannon b. ca 1800-1832 m. 23 Sept. 1817 Hiram
Compton b. 1800-1874 s/o John and Eleanor Compton
d. William V. Shannon b. 1806 d. 1891, well known Methodist minister, m. 1929 Polly Moore of Abbs Valley, 4 children, resided at Bailey Switch near Springville
e. Rebecca Shannon m. 25 Nov. 1830 Elihu Compton b. ca 1800, son of John and Eleanor or Elinor Compton, had thirteen children and resided near Yards on the Bluestone River.

2. Hart Shannon, horse trader, killed on trip to Williamsburg

3. Elizabeth Shannon b. ca 1780 m. Henry Donahue, d. KY

4. Jane Shannon b. 27 Nov, 1782 m.4 Jan. 1803 John Burgess, d. Platte Co.,MO

5. Nancy Shannon b. ca 1783 m. 15 Sept. 1803 James Moore b. 1770 d.
1851, captive of Abbs Valley, nine children

6. James Shannon b. 1787 d. 1881, Capt. m. 1813 Mary McDonald, dau/o Capt. Edward McDonald, resided in Wyoming Co, twelve children. James served in Capt. James Moores Co, Montgomery Co. became wealthy planter and Justice< -member of Wyoming Co Court. During the Civil War, these Shannons were in sympathy with slave holders, and five sons left for Kansas to help in the War of Rebellion.



7 Layne Shannon b. 12 May 1789 d. 15 Aug. 1865 was a methodist minister m. (1st).Mattie Cohen, six children, m. (2nd) Catherine Cooke, resided Wyoming Co. He also was a Justice-member and actively involved in educational and religiour affairs, building on his property one of the first Methodist churches in Wyoming Co.




8. John Shannon b. 1792 m. 15 Oct. 1809 (1st) Jennie Cartmill and m.
7 Aug. 1814 (2nd) Rebecca Compton, dau/o John and Eleanor McQuires-Compton.

Cornelius Shannon and Annie McGranahan (from Ireland) m. 11 Dec. 1810 in
Tazewell Co. Cornelius was appointed to the June T. for constable for a term
of two years.
Brother to Cornelius? John Shannon m. Rebecah Cumpton 7 Aug. 1814. Brother
to Annie ? James P. McGranahan m. Cynthis Brown 7 Sept. 1826.This listing of Andrew Shanan was probably Cornelius.
