1. John1 STANDOFF died December 1830, Rockbridge County, VA.1 He married Mary ___________, she was living as late as 1840. Mary gave her age as 90 in 1836 when the suit was brought to settle John Standoff's estate. Thus, she would have been born about 1746. Assuredly, John Standoff was of the right age to have fought in the Revolutionary War. This has not been explored by the compiler, nor has his life been studied in depth. A great controversy arose when John died. In the Chancery Suit, his son Henry states that his father died testate (with a will) however his mother destroyed it. Hannah Armentrout, John and Mary's daughter, testified her mother would do no such thing. Henry brought charges against his mother, but when the Sheriff informed him that his ninety year old mother would be thrown in jail, he dropped the charges against her.2 An Inventory and Appraisal of John's estate was entered in Rockbridge 6 June 1831.3 Another appraisal was later recorded.4 Mary Standoff's dower was assigned 22 April 1832.5 John Standoff was the owner of a large estate, which took years to settle.
One must keep in mind when reviewing the genealogy of this family that House Mountain is and was a remote area of the county. Travel was not as easy then as today. A trip to Lexington in order to obtain a marriage license may not have been viewed as worth the effort involved. Many of these mountaineers only had their own two feet for transportation. Thus we find a number of common law marriages in the remote regions of the county.6
