What
is a Psalm?
The meaning of the word "psalm" is praise. The Book of Psalms contains 150 poems of praise to God. It is the longest book in the Bible. King David wrote many of the psalms and set them to music. The Israelites sang these songs when they worshipped the Lord. People love the psalms today because they help us celebrate God and His goodness.
Some psalms are cries for God’s help. My God, my God, why hast Thou forsaken me? Why art Thou so far from helping me, and from the words of my roaring? Psalm 22:1
Many of the psalms give thanks to the Lord. I love the Lord, because He hath heard my voice and my cries.Thou hast delivered my soul from death, mine eyes from tears, and my feet from falling. Psalm 116: 1,8
Psalms of praise describe God’s greatness. Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands. Serve the Lord with gladness:Come before His presence with singing. Know ye that the Lord He is God: It is He that hath made us, and not we ourselves. We are His people, and the sheep of His pasture. Psalm 100: 1-3
Some psalms explain the way God wants us to live. Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in His law doth he meditate day and night. Psalm 1:1-2
