Joseph S. Daly '49
The 2002 inductees into the Alumni Hall of Fame include Joseph S. Daly, a 1951 graduate, a long-time resident of Arlington and a former member of the co-state champion football team of 1949. Joe is a former state representative from Arlington, a charter member of the Irish-American Club and its first president-elect. He is president of the Teamster’s Union in Cambridge, MA and a member of the Arlington Democratic Town Committee. Joe served his country in the Korean War and was an honor guard for President Eisenhower. He serves as a commander in the Arlington American Legion and serves as the veteran administrator for the Town of Arlington. Joe has a significant record of volunteerism in the community. He has been a town meeting member for over 25 years, a member of the Knights of Columbus and a member of the Retired Man’s Club of Arlington. Joe also serves as a director of the Arlington High School Alumni Association and presently serves as its vice president.
Doctor Shizuo Mukai '74
Doctor Shizuo Mukai, a 1974 graduate of Arlington High School, is an ophthalmologist and an assistant professor in ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School. He is presently on staff at the Massachusetts Eye & Ear Infirmary in Boston, MA. Dr. Mukai is a 1979 graduate of Brown University, receiving degrees in biology and studio arts and a 1982 graduate of the Brown University School of Medicine receiving a medical degree and a degree in biology. He served his internship at Mt. Auburn Hospital, Cambridge, MA and did his residency in ophthalmology at the Massachusetts Eye & Ear Infirmary. He received several clinical and research fellowships, including a research fellowship in ophthalmology (molecular genetics/pathology) and a fellowship in Retina/Molecular Biology. He has written and published numerous medical articles. Dr. Mukai belongs to a number of medical committees and is involved in numerous professional societies. He has received a number of awards and honors, including the Gilbert Stewart prize in Art Sculpture from Brown University, the Charles L. Schepens Book Award and the Harvard Medical School Award for excellence in mentoring. In addition to his educational and professional pursuits, Dr. Mukai serves as the medical contact for the Greater Boston Japanese Association and volunteers at the Pine Street Inn.
Alan Christie Wilson '61
Alan Christie Wilson was a 1961 graduate of Arlington High School. He was the lead guitarist and co-founder of the band “Canned Heat”, as well as a gifted songwriter. Mr. Wilson was an environmentalist before it was a popular cause. He initiated and organized the organization “Music Mountain” to assist in the preservation of the Redwood Forest. In connection with his environmental activities, he performed world-wide. Alan died September 2, 1970. His nomination and award will be accepted by his mother, Barbara Wilson.
Daniel J. Shine '73
Daniel J. Shine, a 1973 graduate of Arlington High School, presently serves as the director of athletics for Arlington Catholic High School, where he is responsible for the administration and management of athletic programs. Dan, along with Carl DeMatteo, athletic director of Arlington High School, was instrumental in planning and implementing the joint athletic events between Arlington High School and Arlington Catholic, known as game day. Dan also serves as the head coach for the Arlington Catholic varsity boy’s ice hockey team. He is affiliated with numerous interscholastic sports programs and associations. He has received the coach of the year award from the Boston Globe and the Boston Herald in both 1990 and 1997. In addition, he has received the athletic director of the year award from the Massachusetts Athletic Director’s Association.
Margaret Walsh Phaneuf, Maureen Walsh Bayou and Carol Finlayson Bragg
Margaret Walsh Phaneuf and Maureen Walsh Bahou, sisters and Carol Finlayson Bragg, friends from their days at Arlington High School, will jointly be inducted into the Arlington High School Hall of Fame for their volunteer work. These friends, trained as nurses, have volunteered their services to provide medical services in third world countries. The three were able to use their love of nursing to travel at their own expense on medical missions to Colombia, South America, Romania and Nicaragua with a team of surgeons, anesthesiologists and nurses to provide reconstructive surgery services to children, who have been ravaged by war and terrorism. Their true spirit of volunteerism and their love of children have taken them to many places all over the world. Their dedication and conviction truly epitomize the spirit of Arlington High School.
David Walkinshaw '75David is a third generation graduate of Arlington High School. He is the president and proprietor of Saville & Grannon Funeral Services and a frequent lecturer in the field.
David is active in the community, serving as a director for the Arlington Boys & Girls Club, a member of the Board of Youth Services, a Rotarian, member of the Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Arlington Friends of Hospice.
David has also served as a Town Meeting Member and is active in a number of business organizations.
Anne was the first woman elected to a major political office in Arlington. In 1959, she was elected as Town Clerk. She served in this capacity until 1968. In 1984, she was again elected as Town Clerk.
In 1973, she was appointed to the Board of Selectmen and was elected as a Selectman in 1975, a position in which she served until 1981. Additionally, Anne served as a Town Meeting Member.
Upon her retirement from government service in 1993, The Arlington Advocate had this to say, "Anne has the fair-mindedness that is especially important for a Town Clerk; she works to promote openness in government; she shows respect for the rights and opinions of ordinary citizens and at the same time she has her own firm ideas and does not hesitate to offer them".
Howard was a varsity athlete at AHS, who contracted polio while a student. He never allowed his disability to impact his studies. Howard went on to have a successful career in business.
Tragedy struck his family in 1987. His daughter Jeanne was the victim of a vicious attack in her dormitory room at Lehigh University. The attack resulted in her death. Although devasted by their loss, Howard and his wife Connie chose to memorialize their daughter's life by establishing an organization, "Security On Campus, Inc.", with the purpose of revealing, reducing, and ultimately eliminating crime on college campuses, including campus violence, drug abuse and binge drinking. This organization also assists students and their families who are victims of crime.
Through the efforts of Howard and the organization he founded, numerous federal and state las have been enacted which address these issues. Howard's work received recognition from President George Bush and his Attorny General, who honored him at a ceremony at the White House.
After graduating from college, Nanci returned to her hometown to teach Spanish at AHS. Her commitment and dedication to her students is as vital today as it was over 30 years ago.
Nanci is the second president of the Alumni Association. Under her leadership, she made the AHS Alumni Directory, a valuable resource for the Arlington Alumni, a reality. She has also served as president of the Arlington Sportsmen's Club. She continues to serve as a Faculty Advisor to the Student Yearbook Committee at AHS. She is a long standing Town Meeting member and has served on the Democratic Town Committee.
Nanci's professional and community service to the youth of Arlington is exceptional.
John was the founder of Cullinet Software, Inc., one of the pioneers in the computer software industry.
John has been a leader in the business world. He has been selected on several occasions as CEO of the Year by the Wall Street Transcript, has been a fellow in the center for business and government at the John F. Kennedy School of Government, and has authored various papers and books.
John has been a contributor to the development of computer technology in Ireland and has been honored as "Irishman of the Year" by the Friends of the John F. Kennedy Library.
John is a graduate of Northeastern University and has been presented with the outstanding alumnus award for business and industry.
