Applegate & Spriggs

Richard APPLEGATE
(ca 1815 - April 5, 1891)
&
Rebecca SPRIGGS
(ca 1830 - December 10th 1888)
OH and KY

I found the 1 Apr 1847 marriage record of my GG Grandparents Richard APPLEGATE and Rebecca SPRIGGS in Scioto County Ohio. Rebecca was born ca 1830, probably in Jackson County Ohio. Richard probably was born in Kentucky ca 1815. The family moved to Greenup County Ky where they lived from about 1848 until about 1856 when Richard moved the family to Campbell County, Ky. Richard apparently moved the family into Cincinnati Ohio about 1879 where they were somehow missed in the 1880 census.

The Known Family:
Richard Applegate: Born abt 1815 in KY or possibly Scioto County, Ohio. He was living in Cincinnati Ohio per the 1891-92 Cincinnati City Directory but died April 5, 1891 and was buried in Evergreen Cemetery just outside Newport Kentucky. The buriel permit was obtained by "Robinson" which would probably be his daughter Margaret and her husband John Robinson.

Rebecca Spriggs: Born abt 1830, Jackson County, OH. She reportedly delivered her grand daughter Silva Pearl Robinson in 1885. Rebecca died December 10, 1888 and was buried in Evergreen Cemetery December 11, 1888.
Rebecca was reportedly daughter of Joseph Spriggs and Rebecca Bond of Jackson County, OH.

***The Kids***

- Petunia Applegate: Born abt 1848, probably Greenup Co., KY. She was found in the 1850 census and last found in the 1860 census with her parents.

- Josiah Applegate: Born abt 1849, probably Greenup Co., KY. He was found in the 1850 census and last found in the 1860 census with his parents.

- Maria Applegate: Born abt 1851, probably Greenup Co., KY. Not in 1860 census but found in 1870 census making me believe this may be the same girl as Rachael

- Rachael Applegate: Born 19 June 1853, Died 5 Dec 1918, Newport, Campbell Co. KY. Married John Adkinson ca 1875 and had several children. Found in the 1860 census with her parents. Not found in the 1870 census so she may also be known as Maria

- Louisa Applegate: Born 20 June 1853, Greenup Co., KY. Found in the 1860 census with her parents. Not found in 1870 census.

- Elizabeth Applegate: Born abt 1856, KY. Found in the 1860 and 1870 census with her parents. "Lizzie" was living with her brother and father in the 1886-87 Newport City Directory. She married Sylvester Adams in HAmilton County Ohio on December 4, 1889. Last found as a widow in the 1920 census but this may be the Elizabeth Bridge mentioned in report of the death of her Brother Richard Franklin Applegate in 1930.

- Margaret Applegate: Born Mar. 1857, KY. Died 16 Dec. 1904, Newport, Campbell Co. KY. Married John Robinson. She was Found in the 1860 and 1875 census with her parents.

- Minta Applegate: Born abt 1860, KY. Found in the 1860 census with her parents. Not found in the 1870 census unless also known as Alice.

Frank married (1) Kate Thompson ca 1877 - July 30, 1895 and (2) Emma Robinson CA 1870 - ??. Known Children are:
John E, Applegate - Bn March 1895 in Kentucky.
Elizabeth M. Applegate - Bn September 1899 in Kentucky.
Unknown Applegate - Bn and died between 1895 and 1900 census.

I have not found this family after 1900.

Richard (born 1815) was reported as son of James Applegate and Charity Norman according to some research. This has not been proven but I an guessing James was the father or grandfather of Richard. James apparently lived the last years of his life in Greenup County.

Richard's Son Richard F. APPLEGATE died in 1930 and the person giving information for the death certificate, (ELizabeth Bridge), said that Richard Jr was born in Portsmouth Ohio. This makes me suspect that Richard and Rebecca still had family there and Rebecca went "home" to have her children.

I will gladly exchange information, theories, and wild guesses about these families, their ancestors and descendents with any researcher!
