Nehemiah Royce is named as one of the original proprietors of Marlow when it was first given a charter in 1761. Although he probably only lived there a short time. He probably invested in the town as an oportunity to make money, hoping that the town would prosper and increase his stock, which was in the form of land each share being aprox. 200 acres.

From Walpole As It Was and As It Is by: George Aldrich

Royce Jonathan came from Connecticut to Marlow about the time of the exodus of families from that state to the settlements on the Connecticut River, which was between 1775 and 1780. He drew his household goods upon a hand sled and was guided on his way by marked trees to the above mentioned place. He built himself a log cabin in the wilderness; but did not remain there, only a year later he removed to Walpole and pitched on the farm now owned by Oliver Hall, where he remained for a while, then he removed to the Valley, where he located permanently. He owned at one time, more poor land than any man living. In Walpole, the number of acres being two thousand, twelve hundred and the remainder in Essex, NY. His name first appears on the town records in 1787, as one of the selectmen, and he was elected to that office more years than any other man in the town. He was for many years Justice of the Peace and is generally remembered as Squire Royce. In the first years of the present century, he embraced the political sentiments of Thomas Jefferson and lent his aide in the establishment and support of a political newspaper, known as the Political Observatory published here.
