DRIVING EAST on Grand from May Avenue, it's hard to believe that
Nichols Hills Baptist Church will soon be torn down to make way
for office buildings. But that's OK, the Rev. Charles Graves told
us in a visit to his office this week.
By fall, his congregation will be in its new facility up on May Avenue, north of Memorial. The Nichols Hills Baptists are planning a week of dedication beginning Nov. 7, so the new building had better be ready by then.
Charles has served the congregation 15 1/2 years, being only its second minister. The first was Dr. Rupert Naney, who helped found the church in 1950. The group met first in a lumberyard, then in the old Lakeside Theater before building the present church plant.
Dr. Rupert F. Naney, longtime Baptist minister and former president
of the Oklahoma Southern Baptist Convention, died Friday at the
Baptist
Medical Center. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Nichols Hills
Baptist
Church with burial in Memorial Park Cemetery.
Naney, 88, of 6217 N. Drexel, was born Cec. 9, 1899, in Bruno,
Ark.
Raised in Yellville, Ark., he attended Ouachita College in Arkadelphia,
Ark., where he met his future wife, Lee Barrow. He graduated in
1916 in the
same class with former Oklahoma Gov. William J. Holloway, a lifelong
friend.
His first pastorate was at the First Baptist Church of Clarksville,
Texas. He was minister of Olivet Baptist Church from 1924 to 1947
and
during that time was president of the Oklahoma Southern Baptist
Convention
and presiding officer of the National Southern Baptist Convention.
He was also a member of the Board of Regents of Oklahoma Baptist
University and Oklahoma State University as well as on the board
of the
Democratic National Convention.
In 1947 he became minister of Lookout Mountain Baptist Church,
Chattanooga, Tenn., and remained until 1949 when he moved back
to Oklahoma
City to start Nichols Hills Baptist Church. He was the minister
there for
17 years until his retirement to senior pastor in 1967.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Mary Lanelle Young, of the
home,
and three grandchildren.
