THE FAMILY OF JOHN TURNER KING

 

 

            JOHN TURNER KING, son of Sarah Stroud and William King, was born 1 January 1793 near Chapel Hill, Orange County, North Carolina.  He died 3 December 1876, and is buried in Sacul Cemetery in Sacul, Nacogdoches County, Texas.

            He was raised in and went to school in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, and used to tell that he went to school with President James Knox Polk.

            John married 1st Martha E. Whitaker in 1812.

            They came from Linclon County, Tennessee to Texas in the 1850's to join some of their children who had already settled in Nacogdoches County.

            Martha, daughter of Martha Willcoxon Wilson and Elder John Whitaker, was born in May 1799 in Kentucky, and died 4 January 1862 before the close of the Civil War, in Nacogdoches County, Texas and is buried in the King Cemetery, which is now known as the Sacul Cemetery in Sacul, Nacogdoches County, Texas.

            His second marriage was to Mrs. Caroline V. Johnson Tucker on 5 October 1865 in Nacogdoches County, Texas.

            Caroline was the widow of Britton J. Tucker, and daughter of Mary and Hezekiah Johnson.  She had married Britton J. Tucker on  3 September 1853 in Nacogdoches County, Texas.  Mr. Tucker was born ca. 1827 in Tennessee and died after 1862 and before 1865; probably in or during the Civil War.  No Civil War records located on Britton J. Tucker in Texas State Archives.

            John Turner King is listed in the 1850 Census of Nacogdoches County, Texas, living in the home of Susana and Jesse Burk as can be seen below.

            Caroline had one son, Britian J. Tucker, who was born ca. 1855 in Nacogdoches County, Texas.

            John Turner King is listed in the 1854 School Census of Nacogdoches County, Texas; and is also found in the 1861 and 1862 Tax list of the County. 

            The 1860 Census of Nacogdoches County, Texas he and his family are found listed as can be seen below.

            In the 1870 Census of Nacogdoches County, Texas, it can be seen below that a Robert Capps, born ca. 1848 in Mississippi is residing in the home of Caroline V. Johnson Tucker and John T. King.  It is believed that this is a relative of Caroline's, but the exact relationship is not known at this time.

4. William Harrison King, was born ca. 1815 in Tennessee.  He married Martha M. Hague in about 1835, probably in Tennessee.  He is found in the 1850 and 1860 Census; the 1854 School Census; the 1857, 1861 and 1862 Tax Lists of Nacogdoches County, Texas.

 

5. Nancy S. King, born 14 January 1818 in Bedford County, Tennessee, died 4 June 1879 in Nacogdoches County, Texas, buried in the Sacul Cemetery in Sacul, Nacogdoches County, Texas.  She married Daniel H. Hughes, son of Daniel Roland Hughes, on 12 November 1834 in Linclon County, Tennessee.  He was born 16 August 1813 in Logan County, Kentucky and died 13 August 1874 in Nacogdoches County, Texas and is buried in the Sacul Cemetery in Sacul, Nacogdoches County, Texas.

 

6. John W. King, born ca. 1820 and died before 1863 in a Northern Prison Camp during the Civil War.  He married 18 March 1841 in Nacogdoches County, Texas to Elizabeth Ann Whitaker, daughter of Saletha Wave Easter and Benjamin Franklin Whitaker.  His estate is listed on the 1862 Tax List of Nacogdoches County, Texas.  He is listed as the administrator of the estate of John T. King in the 1857 Tax List of Nacogdoches County, Texas.  (John T. King is probably the son of Martha E. Jones and Benjamin F. King, who died 29 September 1949.)

 

7. James M. King, born ca. 1823 in Linclon County, Tennessee.  He married Unicey Fredonia Jones, daughter of Frances Eubanks and Jefferson Y. Jones, on 22 September 1853 in Nacogdoches County, Texas.  He served in the Confederate States Army in 3rd Brigade of Texas State Troops.  Unicey "Nicey" Fredonia Jones King married 2nd. John Turner King, Jr., son of Martha and William Harrison King, on 10 September 1865 in Nacogdoches County, Texas.  He is found listed in the 1857 Tax List; and the 1860 Census of Nacogdoches County, Texas.

 

8. Isaac Wilson King, was born ca. 1822 in Linclon County, Tennessee.  He died 9 August 1883 in Nacogdoches County, Texas.  Isaac married on 18 November 1845 in Linclon County, Tennessee to Hetty Samantha Scott.

 

9. Albert G. King, born ca. 1824 in Linclon County, Tennessee; married Finetta Whitaker, daughter of Sarah "Sallie" Sebastian and Benjamin James Whitaker, on 3 October 1844 in Linclon County, Tennessee.  He served in the Confederate States Army in Company H., 17th Regiment of the Texas Cavalry.

 

10. Eliza Jane King, born 7 September 1826 in Tennessee, and died 16 June 1913 in Nacogdoches County, Texas; and is buried in the Whitaker Cemetery in Nacogdoches County, Texas. She married Lawson Spires Whitaker, on 15 January 1846 in Linclon County, Tennessee, (marriage records says Lossen P. Whitaker), son of Sarah "Sallie" Sebastian and Benjamin James Whitaker.  Lawson was born 14 February 1821 and died 14 January 1912; and is buried in the Whitaker Cemetery in Nacogdoches County, Texas.  His death Certificate gives his date of death as 3 January 1912.  Listed in the 1850 Census of Nacogdoches County, Texas.

 

11. Mary "Polly" King, born ca.1830; Polly N. King married 20 December 1865 in Nacogdoches County, Texas to Henry Brown Rawlinson.

 

12. Rufus Flax King, born ca. 1831 in Linclon County, Tennessee; married Margaret Hearn 25 September 1851 in Nacogdoches County, Texas; listed in the 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880 Census of Nacogdoches County, Texas; 1857 Tax List and 1867 Voters Registration of Nacogdoches County, Texas.

 

13.  Martha E. King, born 1 December 1833; married Littleberry B. White, son of Sarah King and Charles White,  on 6 February 1851 in Nacogdoches County, Texas.  Littleberry B. White was born 20 August 1822 in Tennessee and died 1 January 1905 in McLennan County, Texas.  He is buried in the China Springs Cemetery in McLennan County, Texas.  He is listed in the 1850 Census of Nacogdoches County, Texas.

 

14. Daniel Houston King, born 29 May 1836 in Tennessee and died 29 March 1921 in Smith County, Texas.  He is buried in the Bradford Cemetery in Smith County, Texas.  Daniel married Rhoda S. White on 8 February 1858 in Nacogdoches County, Texas.  He is found listed in the 1861 and 1862 Tax List; the 1867 Voters Registration; and, the 1860 Census of Nacogdoches County, Texas.  He served in the Confederate States Army in  Company K., of the Texas Volunteer Infantry.

 

15. Samuel D. King, ca. 1835

 

16. Thomas W. King, born 1830 in Tennessee.  He married Nancy A. "Addie" Allison on 11 June 1847 in Linclon County, Tennessee (Marriage Records says Thomas H. King).  He is listed in the 1860 Census; and, he is listed on the 1861 Tax List by Cornelius.

 

17. Benjamin Franklin King, born 22 December 1844, and died 17 May 1930.  He is buried in Sacul Cemetery in Sacul, Nacogdoches County, Texas.  He married Martha E. Jones Hughes, daughter of Frances Eubanks and Jefferson Y. Jones, on 5 November 1865 in Nacogdoches County, Texas.  He served in the Confederate States Army in Company K., Texas Volunteer Infantry.  Martha E. Jones King was born 22 February 1847 and died 22 July 1891 and is buried in the Sacul Cemetery in Sacul, Texas.

1. James M. King, born ca. 1837 in Tennessee, and died 17 October 1874 in Nacogdoches County, Texas. He married Sarah A. Looney on 9 January 1866 in Nacogdoches County, Texas.  He served in the Confederate States Army in Company B., 8th Texas Regiment from 1861 until 1865.  James is listed in the 1860 Census; the 1867 Voters Registration and the 1862 Tax Lists of Nacogdoches County, Texas.

 

2. John Turner King, Jr., born ca. 1841 in Texas.  He married Unicey Fredonia Jones King, widow, James M. King the son of Martha Whitaker and John Turner King, Sr., on 10 September 1865 in Nacogdoches County, Texas.  He is found listed in the 1861 Tax List; the 1870 Muster Roll; the 1867 Voters Registration; the 1880 and the 1890 Indian Creek Census of Nacogdoches County, Texas.

 

3. Ann Elizabeth King, born 10 September 1843 in Texas, died 22 February 1915 in Nacogdoches County, Texas and is buried in the McKnight Cemetery in Nacogdoches County, Texas.  She married 8 March 1865 in Nacogdoches County, Texas to Thomas Jefferson McKnight, son of Rebecca Fail and William McKnight.  Thomas was born 18 May 1840 in Alabama and died 28 August 1912 (8 September 1912?) and is buried in the McKnight Cemetery in Nacogdoches County, Texas.

 

4. Frances O. King, born ca. 1845 in Texas; married 11 July 1867 in Nacogdoches County, Texas to Nimrod N. Doyle (he was a Indian), son of  Susan and Nimrod Doyle. 

 

5. Martha M. King, born ca. 1846 in Texas; married 9 January 1867 in Nacogdoches County, Texas to Charles Mote Walters, son of Martha C. Atwood and Robert Walters.  Charles was born ca. 1849 in Smith County, Texas and died 13 June 1915.  He served in the Confederate States Army in Company C., Border's Bn., enlisting in March of 1864 and serving until the end of the War.  His records show that at one point during his service that he took sick with a severe case of the measles and relapsed; he got permission to take 2 tow 3 week to go to his Aunt's home near Tyler, Texas.  Charles received Confederate Pension # 21980.

8. Nancy Elvira "Ellie" King, born ca. August 1850 in Nacogdoches County, Texas; married 18 October 1869 in Nacogdoches County, Texas to Christopher Columbus McKnight.

 

9. Tennessee King, born ca 1852 in Nacogdoches County, Texas; married 28 December 1879 in Nacogdoches County, Texas to J. N. A. Copeland. They are not located in the 1880 Census of Nacogdoches County, Texas.

 

10.  Lawson Spires King, born ca. 1858-9 in Nacogdoches County, Texas, and died 1942 in Nacogdoches County, Texas.  He is buried in the McKnight Cemetery in Nacogdoches County, Texas.  He married Mary F. Fuller on 2 January 1884 in Nacogdoches County, Texas.  Mary was born 1863 and died 1954 and is buried in the McKinght Cemetery.  He is listed in the 1880 and the 1890 Census of Nacogdoches County, Texas.

            NANCY S. KING, daughter of Martha E. Whitaker and John Turner King, was born 14 January 1818 in Bedford County, Tennessee, died 4 June 1879 in Nacogdoches County, Texas.  She was buried in the Sacul Cemetery in Sacul, Nacogdoches County, Texas. 

            Nancy married Daniel H. Hughes, son of Daniel Roland Hughes, on 12 November 1834 in Linclon County, Tennessee. 

            Nancy is listed in the 1862 Tax List of Nacogdoches County, Texas; and,  is also found in the 1880 Mortality Schedule, which lists her cause of death as "Gastritis".

            Daniel H. Hughes was born 16 August 1813 in Logan County, Kentucky and died 13 August 1874 in Nacogdoches County, Texas and is buried in the Sacul Cemetery in Sacul, Nacogdoches County, Texas.

            He can be found listed in the 1857, 1861 and 1862 Tax List of Nacogdoches County, Texas; and he is listed in the 1854 School Census of the County.

            Daniel was a Mason and a member of the Baptist Church.

1. Mary "Polly" Ann Hughes,  was born ca. 1835 in Tennessee, married 1st. Jefferson F. P. Wilkins, 2nd. Thomas B. Murphey, son of Carolyn Burns and John Lane Murphey, on 2 October 1856 in Nacogdoches County, Texas. Thomas was born ca. 1833 in Alabama.  In the 1850 Census of Nacogdoches County, Texas he is listed in the home of Elizabeth Parmlee and Thomas H. Rogers.

 

2. Roland "Rollen" E. Hughes, born ca. 1840 in Texas, died ca. 1864.  He was returning home after the Civil War with his brother William and Uncle Albert King, but died before making it home, as did his brother William Hughes.  Their Uncle Albert King buried them in the spot where they had died.  He married Martha E. Jones, on 5 December 1861 in Nacogdoches County, Texas.  He is listed on the 1861 and 1862 Tax Lists of Nacogdoches County, Texas.  Confederate States Army Muster Roll # 16.

 

3. Martha Hughes, born ca. 1842 in Texas.

 

4. William C. Hughes, born ca. 1847-50 in Texas;  died ca. 1864.  He was returning home from the Civil War with his brother Roland and Uncle Albert King, but died before making it home, as did his brother Roland Hughes.  Their Uncle Albert King buried them in the spot where they had died.  He had married Mary E. Gary.

 

5. Susan E. "Eller"  L. Hughes, born ca. 1848 in Texas; married William Clark on 16 November 1865 in Nacogdoches County, Texas.  William was born ca. 1832 in South Carolina and is listed in the 1867 Voters Registration; the 1870, 1880 and 1890 Indian Creek Beat Census of Nacogdoches County, Texas.

 

6. Eliza C. Hughes, born October 1850 in Nacogdoches County, Texas; married Edwin (Burrows??) L. Dickson on 16 January 1868 in Nacogdoches County, Texas. Edwin Dickson was born ca. 1838 in Tennessee; and he served in the Confederate States Army in Linn Flatt Company of 12 Month Men. 

 

7. Amanda "Mandy" Venetta Hughes, born 4 May 1857 in Nacogdoches County, Texas, and died 23 February 1931.  She is buried in the Sacul Cemetery in Sacul, Nacogdoches County, Texas.  Mandy married William Thomas "W. T." Williamson on 19 July 1874 in Nacogdoches County, Texas.  William was born 25 March 1853 and died 10 December 1937; and, he is buried in the Sacul Cemetery in Sacul, Nacogdoches County, Texas.

 

8. John Daniel Hughes, born ca. March 1860 in Nacogdoches County, Texas, married Anna J. Moore, daughter of Col. James W. Moore.  He is listed on the 1880 Census of Nacogdoches County, Texas as a Farmer; he is also listed in the County's 1980 Census in the Indian Creek Beat.

            JOHN W. KING, son of Martha E. Whitaker and John Turner King, was born ca. 1820 and died before 1863.  His estate is listed on the 1862 Tax List of Nacogdoches County, Texas.

            He married 18 March 1841 in Nacogdoches County, Texas to Elizabeth Ann Whitaker, daughter of Saletha Wave Easter and Benjamin Franklin Whitaker.  Elizabeth was born ca. 1827.         

            He is listed as the administrator of the estate of John T. King in the 1857 Tax List of Nacogdoches County, Texas.  This couldn't be his father's estate (John T. King), because his father died 3 December 1876.

            JAMES M. KING, son of Martha E. Whitaker and John Turner King, was born ca. 1823 in Linclon County, Tennessee.  He served in the Confederate States Army in 3rd Brigade of Texas State Troops. 

            He married Unicey Fredonia Jones, daughter of Frances Eubanks and Jefferson Y. Jones, on 22 September 1853 in Nacogdoches County, Texas.  Unicey Fredonia Jones King married 2nd. John Turner King, Jr., son of Martha and William Harrison King, on 10 September 1865 in Nacogdoches County, Texas.

Williamson King was born ca. 1864 in Mississippi and died by November 1892 in Nacogdoches County, Texas.  He married 2nd Mrs. M. Elizabeth "Lizzie" Gresham on 3 November 1892 in Nacogdoches County, Texas.  He is listed in the 1870, 1880 and 1890 Census of Nacogdoches County, Texas.

 

3. Laura V. King, born ca. 1858 in Texas in Nacogdoches County, Texas; married 30 December 1874 in Nacogdoches County, Texas to Sterling Franklin Bawcom (Baucom), who was born 23 November 1852 and died 30 June 1930.

King, born 7 July 1866 in Nacogdoches County, Texas, and  died 6 March 1959 in Nacogdoches County, Texas.  He is buried in the McKnight Cemetery in Nacogdoches County, Texas.  Jesse married Frances Ida Gresham, daughter of Rebecca McKnight and James Henry Gresham,  on 14 December 1887 in Nacogdoches County, Texas.  He is listed in the 1880 Census and the 1980 Census in Linn Flatt, Nacogdoches County, Texas.

 

2. M. E. King (daughter), born ca. 1868 in Nacogdoches County, Texas.

 

3. N. Olivia King, born ca. 1870 in Nacogdoches County, Texas; married 16 December 1886 in Nacogdoches County, Texas to M. W. Russell.

 

4. Albert F. King, born ca. 1873 in Nacogdoches County, Texas; died 1923 in Nacogdoches County, Texas and buried in the McKnight Cemetery in Nacogdoches County, Texas.  He married Mary Jane______, who was born 1871 and died 1954 and is also buried in McKinght Cemetery.  He is listed in the 1880 Census of Nacogdoches County, Texas.

            Hetty Samantha Scott King was born 21 February 1830 and died 13 January 1883 in Nacogdoches County, Texas.  She is buried in the Sacul Cemetery in Sacul, Nacogdoches County, Texas.

            He is found listed in the 1867 Voters Registration of Nacogdoches County, Texas.  He is also found in the 1861 and 1862 Tax Lists.         

            Mrs. Hetty Samantha Scott King, widow (?) of Isaac Wilson King married on 28 December 1865 in Nacogdoches County, Texas to Robert Y. Bigham, who is believed to be the son of Tabitha and Mathias Bigham. 

            If Isaac Wilson King did not died until 9 August 1883 and Hetty married Robert Y. Bigham on 28 December 1865, then there is no way she could have been a widow as listed in numerous other publication on this family.

            If Robert Y. Bigham (Bingham) is the son of Tabitha and Mathias Bighman, then he did not come to Nacogdoches, Texas until after the 1850 Census; because, he is not listed in that Census with that family, and does not appear anywhere else in the 1850 Census of Nacogdoches County, Texas.

            Robert was born 8 January 1834 in Tennessee and died 2 April 1882 in Nacogdoches County, Texas.  He is buried in the Sacul Cemetery in Sacul, Nacogdoches County, Texas.  He is listed in the 1861 and 1862 Tax Lists; the 1870 and the 1880 Census of Nacogdoches County, Texas.

            ALBERT G. KING, son of Martha E. Whitaker and John Turner King, was born ca. 1824 in Linclon County, Tennessee.

            He married Finetta Whitaker on 3 October 1844 in Linclon County, Tennessee. 

            Finetta Whitaker King, was the daughter of Sarah "Sallie" Sebastian and Benjamin James Whitaker.  She was born ca. 1828 in Tennessee.

            He served in the Confederate States Army in Company H., 17th Regiment of the Texas Cavalry.

            After the Civil War was over Albert was returning home along with his nephews Roland and William Hughes, son of Albert's Sister Nancy S. King and Daniel H. Hughes, they stopped to Camp and one of his nephews died and Albert buried him where he died.  The next night they made camp again and the other nephew died and was buried where he died.  Albert was left with their two horses to bring home without their owners.

            Albert is listed in the 1854 School Census; and, the 1857, 1861 and 1862 Tax List of Nacogdoches County, Texas.

            MARY "POLLY" KING, daughter of Martha E. Whitaker and John Turner King, was born ca. 1830.

            Polly N. King married 20 December 1865 in Nacogdoches County, Texas to Henry Brown Rawlinson, son of Minna and Rev. Amos Rawlinson.

            Henry was born in February 1840 in Alabama.  He died 26 April 1911 in Austin, Texas at the Confederate Home for Veterans and Widows, and is buried in the State Cemetery in Austin, Texas.

            Henry came to Texas in 1848 and served in the Confederate States Army in Company B., 8th Texas Infantry Regiment.  He enlisted on 15 November 1861 and served until May 1865.  He received Confederate Pension # 14351 and entered the Confederate Home in Austin on 12 September 1910.

            He is listed on the 1867 Voters Registration of Nacogdoches County, Texas.  And, he is found in the 1870 and 1880 Census of Nacogdoches County, Texas.

            He married Martha E. Jones, daughter of Frances Eubanks and Jefferson Y. Jones, on 5 November 1865 in Nacogdoches County, Texas.  Martha E. Jones King was born 22 February 1847 and died 22 July 1891 and is buried in the Sacul Cemetery in Sacul, Texas.

            Benjamin served in the Confederate States Army in Company K., Texas Volunteer Infantry.  Ben is also listed in the 1870 Muster Roll of Nacogdoches County.  He entered the Confederate Home for Veterans and Widows in Austin, Texas on  17 April 1930.

            He is listed in the 1867 Voters Registration of Nacogdoches County, Texas.  And, he is again found listed in the 1870, 1880 and in the 1890 Indian Creek Beat Census of Nacogdoches County, Texas.

            Ann married 8 March 1865 in Nacogdoches County, Texas to Thomas Jefferson McKnight, son of Rebecca Fail and William McKnight. 

            Thomas was born 18 May 1840 in Alabama and died 28 August 1912 (8 September 1912?) and is buried in the McKnight Cemetery in Nacogdoches County, Texas.

            Thomas came to Texas in 1848 and served in the Confederate States Army in Company B., 8th Texas Infantry.  He enlisted on 15 November 1861 and was discharged in June of 1862 because of "Failure of health"; but, he did receive Confederate Pension # 16131, and is listed in the 1870 Muster Roll of Nacogdoches County, Texas.

            Thomas is also found in the 1867 Voters Registration of Nacogdoches County.

            Ann Elizabeth King McKnight received Confederate Pension # 21312.

            Susan Doyle was born ca. 1785 in Alabama and married Nimrod Doyle and had children: Jackson Doyle, born ca. 1816 in Georgia; Winchester Doyle, born ca. 1828 in Alabama; Muscogy Hardige Doyle; and Nimrod N. Doyle who is mention above.

            Jackson Doyle, brother of Nimrod Doyle, married 1st Sarah _____, who died 4 December 1857 (her estate is listed on the 1861 and 1862 Tax lists and the taxes were paid by S. Hayter).  He married 2nd. Mary E. Garrett on 30 May 1858.  He is on the 1850, 1860 and 1870 Census; the 1857, 1861 and 1862 Tax Lists; and, the 1854 School Census of Nacogdoches County, Texas.  Jackson served in Company D., 3rd Brigade of the Texas State Troop in the Confederate States Army during the Civil War.  His children were: Archibald Doyle, born ca. 1832 in Alabama; an unknown son; Samuel H. Doyle, born ca. 1842 in Texas, (Indian), married Alafrse Ownes on 10 September 1868 in Nacogdoches County, Texas, served in C. S. A. in Linn Flatt Company of 12 Month's Men, had one child Sarah, born ca. 1870 in Texas; Stephen F. A. Doyle, born ca. 1844 in Arkansas; Elizabeth Doyle, born ca. 1849 in Texas; Nancy Doyle, born ca. 1852 in Texas; George S. Doyle, born ca. 1855 in Texas; and William Doyle, born ca. 1864 in Texas.

            Winchester Doyle, brother of Nimrod Doyle, married Nancy Brewer on 16 April 1846 in Rusk County, Texas.  He is listed on the 1850 Census and the 1854 School Census of Nacogdoches County, Texas.  Nancy Brewer and Winchester Doyle were the parents of Nimrod Doyle, born ca. 1848 in Texas; Malvina Doyle, born ca. 1949 in Texas; and Winchester Doyle, born ca. 1852 in Texas.

            MARTHA M. KING, daughter of Martha M. Hague and William Harrison King, was born ca. 1846 in Texas.  She died 5 January 1920 at age 73 and is believed to have been buried in the Redland Cemetery in Nacogdoches County, Texas.

            She married 9 January 1867 in Nacogdoches County, Texas to Charles Mote Walters, son of Martha C. Atwood and Robert Walters.  Charles was born ca. 1849 in Smith County, Texas and died 13 June 1915. 

            He served in the Confederate States Army in Company C., Border's Bn., enlisting in March of 1864 and serving until the end of the War.  His records show that at one point during his service that he took sick with a severe case of the measles and relapsed; he got permission to take 2 tow 3 week to go to his Aunt's home near Tyler, Texas.  Charles received Confederate Pension # 21980.

            The 1880 and 1890 Census of Nacogdoches County lists him and his family as, a resident of the County, and a farmer living in precinct # 2.  In the 1890 Census he was living in the Indian Creek Beat.  He is also listed on the 1870 Muster Roll of the County.

            He was returning home from the Civil War with his brother Roland and Uncle Albert King, but died before making it home, as did his brother Roland Hughes.  Their Uncle Albert King buried them in the spot where they had died. 

            He married Mary E. Gary, daughter of Martha W. Holt and Henery C. Gary, who was born ca. 1847 in South Carolina.

            ELIZA C. HUGHES, daughter of Nancy S. King and Daniel H. Hughes,  was born October 1850 in Nacogdoches County, Texas.

            She married Edwin L. Dickson on 16 January 1868 in Nacogdoches County, Texas.

            Edwin L. Dickson, was born ca. 1838 in Tennessee; and he served in the Confederate States Army in Linn Flatt Company of 12 Month Men. 

            Mr. Edwin Dickson in listed in the 1861 and 1862 Tax Lists of Nacogdoches County, Texas.  In the 1867 Voters Registration of Nacogdoches County he stated that he had been a resident of the county for 16 years, which would place his arrival in Texas as 1851.

            Edwin L. Dickson, was the son of Mrs. Eliza A. Vannoy Dickson Sharp (widow of James W. Sharp). 

            In the 1860 Census of Nacogdoches County, Texas Mrs. Eliza A. Sharp is show having a son Burrows Dixon who was born ca. 1838 in Tennessee as seen below.  Could this be Edwin's twin brother or could Edwin's middle name be Burrows instead of L.  This writer believes that this is Edwin since his mother is listed on the 1861 and 1862 Tax Lists by an E. B. Dickson and he stated he had arrived in Texas in 1851 and there is no other Dickson\Dixon listed in the 1860 Census of the County.  Burrows may have been a nickname or his middle name.

            Eliza A. Vannoy Dickson, daughter of Mary Reese and Joel Vannoy,  married James M. Sharp in 9 June 1853 in Nacogdoches County, Texas.  James M. Sharp had been married 1st to Mary Ann Sparks, daughter of Richard Sparks, on 6 February 1840 in Nacogdoches County, Texas; and 2nd Margaret Ann Evans, on 21 December 1848 in Nacogdoches County, Texas.

            Mrs. Eliza A. Vannoy Dickson Sharp, was born 17 September 1814 in North Carolina and died 30 August 1889 in Nacogdoches County, Texas.  She is buried in the Friendship Cemetery in Nacogdoches County, Texas. She is listed on the 1861 and 1862 Tax Lists by E. B. Dickson. (This is probably Edwin Burrows Dickson.)  She is also listed in the 1860, 1870 and the 1880 Census of nacogdoches County, Texas.

            James M. Sharp had received Headright # 525, and emigrated on 14 February 1839 as a single man.  He was a member of the Masonic Lodge # 43.  And, he is listed on the 1840, 1845, 1849, and 1857 Tax List of Nacogdoches County, Texas. In the 1861 and 1862  Tax Lists his estates is listed by Jos. W. Baxter.  James appear on the 1846 Poll Lists and the Probate Records of Nacogdoches County.  He also appears in the 1847 and 1850 Census of Nacogdoches County.  He also fought in the Cherokee Wars of 1838-39.

            James M. Sharp, son of Isabella McKnight and James Sharp, was born 30 September 1811 in Tennessee and died on 31 March 1859.  He is buried in the Friendship Cemetery in Nacogdoches County, Texas

            He married 2nd Mrs. Madora Elizabeth "Lizzie" Gresham on 3 November 1892 in Nacogdoches County, Texas. 

            Elizabeth was born 20 June 1869 and died 8 May 1943 and is buried in the McKnight Cemetery in Nacogdoches County, Texas.  She was the daughter of Rebecca McKnight and James H. Gresham.

            BRADLEY K. KING, son of Hetty Samantha Scott and Isaac Wilson King, was born 8 November 1857 in Texas.  He died 7 January 1938 in Nacogdoches County, Texas, and is buried in the Douglass Cemetery in Douglass, Nacogdoches County, Texas.

            He married Nancy Mary Belle Mitchell, daughter of Martha J. and Robert Mitchell, on 20 September 1879 in Nacogdoches County, Texas.

            Nancy was born 29 October 1858 in Texas and died 17 February 1952 and is buried in the Douglass Cemetery in Douglass, Nacogdoches County, Texas.

            Nancy's mother, Martha J. Mitchell, was born ca. 1830 in Alabama.  Martha married 1st Robert Mitchell, who is believed to have died during the Civil war and definitely died before 1868.  Robert Mitchell is listed in the 1860 Census of Nacogdoches County, Texas; and, he is listed in the Confederate States Army Volunteer Militia.  Martha and Robert Mitchell had three children; Lucy Eliza Mitchell, born ca. 1851 in Arkansas; Nancy Mary Bell Mitchell, born ca. 1858 in Texas; and Robert Mitchell, born ca. 1860 in Texas.

            Martha J. Mitchell remarried James B. H. Bingham (Bigham) on 24 December 1868 in Nacogdoches County, Texas.

            MARY ARTIMISIA KING, daughter of Nancy A. Allison and Thomas W. King, was born ca. 1849 in Texas, and died by 17 June 1903 in Nacogdoches County, Texas.  He place of burial is not known at this time.

            Mary  married 3 November 1872 in Nacogdoches County, Texas to William Renuldo Sparks, son of Mary Ann Allen and Andrew Jackson Sparks.

            William Renuldo Sparks, who was known by most as "Dr. Sparks", was born 11 December 1852 in Robertson County, Texas, and died 18 April 1931.  He is buried in the Cold Spring Cemetery outside of Garrison, Nacogdoches County, Texas.    After Mary's death, William married 2nd Luvenia Watkins Gardner (on 17 June 1903??) in Nacogdoches County, Texas.

            Luvenia Watkins Gardner, daughter of Salina Rambin and Henry Watkins, was born 20 January 1866 in Nacogdoches County, Texas; and, died 26 November 1927 in Nacogdoches County, Texas.  She is buried beside William in Cold Springs Cemetery in Garrison Nacogdoches County, Texas.

            William Renuldo Sparks obtained from man named Young Lloyd "three secret formulas for the removing of skin cancers consisting of a killing savle, a healing salve, and a blood tonic."  It was in high demand and was bottled and sold over the counter and off the self in Stripling-Hazelwood Drug store for years until the FDA made the ingredients unavailable.  The secret formulas still remain guarded by the family today.

Lonnie Graham.

ERNEST WALTER KING

 

            Funeral for Ernest Walter King, 91 of Route 2, Cushing, was held at 2:30 p.m. today, Saturday, at McKnight Congreational Methodist Church, with burial in McKnight Cemetery.

            Officiating ministers were the Rev. Jerral Westbrook and the Rev. Leonard Dearmond.

            Mr. King died Friday morning in Nan Travis Hospital in Jacksonville.

            He was born 13 March 1892 in Nacogdoches County and lived in the county all of his life.  He was a Farmer.

            Survivors include three sister, Mary King of Cushing, Nancy Parker of Central Heights, and Nicie Wade of Cushing.

            Nephews served as pallbearers.

            Services were under the direction of Whitley-Holsomback Funeral Home of Cushing.

Johnson.  Troy was born November 1921.  Ruby and her family were in a auto accident that left her in a wheelchair.  She was told she would never walk again; but, she persisted and regained the use of her legs.

            He married Mattie Virginia Murchison, daughter of Eugenia Watson and A. J. Murchinson.

Mrs. Mattie Virginia King

 

Funeral for Mrs. Mattie Virginia King, 83, of Sacul was held Tuesday at 4 p.m. in Sacul Baptist Church with Rev. L. R. Best, pastor, officiating.

            Assisting were Rev. Mike Williamson, pastor of New Faith Church in Sacul, and Rev. Hank Chandler.

            Interment was in Sacul Cemetery.

            Mrs. King died Monday, July 7, in Cushing Care Center.

            Born September 10, 1902, in Houston County, she was the daughter of A. J. and Eugenia Watson Murchinson.  She lived in Sacul most of he life, and she was a member of Sacul Baptist Church and the Eastern Star Chapter 368, Cushing.

            Surviving are a son, Tom Jack King of Sacul; a daughter Marty Jo Nichols of Cushing; a sister Florence Carns of Sacul; five grandchildren; and six great grandchildren.

            Pallbearers were Billy Gresham, Johnny Williams, Tommy King, Terry Nichols, Mike Nichols, and Ronnie Tidwell.

            Funeral for Tom Jack King, 66, of Sacul was held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Dickie Allen Funeral Chapel in Cushing with internment in Sacul Cemetery.

            Officiating were the Rev. Hank Chandler and the Rev. Billie Thomas.

            Born December 10, 1925, in Sacul, he was the son of James and Mattie Murchinson King.  He was a retired iron ore contractor, a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, a member of the Cushing Masonic Lodge and attended Sacul Methodist Church.  He was a lifelong resident of Sacul.

            Surviving are his wife Mary Ann King, and son Tommy King, both of Sacul; a daughter Linda Williams of Houston; sister Marty Jo Nichols of Cushing; and three grandchildren.

            JESSE KING, married Ellie Mae McKnight, who was born 12 November 1904 in Nacogdoches County, Texas and died 22 June 1988 in Nacogdoches, Texas. She was buried in the McKnight Cemetery near Cushing, Nacogdoches County, Texas.  Ellie Mae was the daughter of Frances Rawlinson and William McKnight.

            Funeral for Mrs. Ellie Mae King, 83, of 3230 Coon Hunter Road will be held Friday at 2 p.m. in McKnight Church with interment in the McKnight Cemetery.

            Officiating will be Rev. W. E. Fuller, pastor of East Side Pentecostal Church.

            Mrs. King died Wednesday June 22, 1988 in Memorial Hospital.

            Born November 12, 1904 in Nacogdoches County, she was the daughter of William and Frances Rawlinson McKnight.  She was a lifelong resident of the count and a Pentecostal.

            Surviving are two sons; Welton (Pete) King and Bobby King; two daughters Syble Rankin and Loyce Broadus, all of Nacogdoches; two sister, Bertie Rawlinson and Ruby Broom of Kilgore; 16 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.

            Pallbearers will be Jeffersy King, Jerry Don King, Robert King, Glen Rawlinson, Jesse Rankin, and Eddie Conway.

            ROBERT DOYLE KING, son of Ellie McKnight and Jesse King, was born 15 May 1934 in Nacogdoches County, Texas and died 19 October 1984 in Appleby, Nacogdoches County, Texas.  He was buried in the McKnight Cemetery near Cushing, Nacogdoches County, Texas. 

            He married Thelma Fuller.

            Funeral for Robert Doyle King, 60, of Appleby will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Bethel Baptist Church in Appleby with Rev. Jeff May and Rev. W. E. Fuller officiating.

            Burial will follow in the McKnight Cemetery near Cushing.

            Mr. King died early Friday at his residence.

            He was born May 15, 1924 in Nacogdoches County, the son of Jesse and Ellie McKnight King.  A lifetine resident of the county, he was retired from Nibco.

            Mr. King was a veteran of World War II, serving in the United States Marines.  He was awarded the Purple Heart.  He was a member of the Woodmen of the World.

            He is survived by his wife, Thelma Fuller King of Appleby; his mother, Ellie McKnight King of Nacogdoches; two sons, Jerry Donn King of Garrison and Robert Dale King of Appleby; two daughters, Judith Maxine Coats of Appleby and Reba Yates of Douglass; to brothers, Weldon Don King of Nacogdoches and Bobby Gene King of Nacogdoches; two sisters, Syble Rankin and Mary Loyce Broaddus, both of Nacogdoches; and eight grandchildren.

            Pallbearers are Pete Peterson, Rudy Tallant, Eddie Conway, Jesse Rankin, Wayne Barrett and Pete Nichols.  Honorary pallbearers are J.L. Upchurch, Buck Lee, C. W. Nettles, James Fitch, Felix Muckleroy and Tommy Christopher.  Honorary pallbearer will be Billy Reneau.

            Whitley-Holsomback Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
