One Maryland Program
In the Post "Extra" for Feb. 2, 2000 was an article that Prince George's County has been added to Speaker Casper Taylor's bill called the "One Maryland Program" to add just over $6 million to "distressed school systems." Originally, only Baltimore ($6M), Allegheny, Caroline, Dorchester, Garrett, Somerset and Worcester counties ($1M each) were considered for extra monies. Here's the link to this story: http://washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/WPlate/2000-02/02/022l-020200-idx.html The Governor still has to put it in his budget and the Assembly has to pass it. If passed, would be added to the fiscal year beginning in July. Please email your support for this bill to the Governor at governor@gov.state.md.us

High school graduation exam?
The Feb. 2, 2000 Washington Post's Extra for Prince George's County reports a prototype of the state's high school graduation exam is now available on the web. Look for the sample exam at http://www.mdk12.org/mspp/high_school/structure/index.html. This article states: "The idea is that students will take the exams at the end of their courses, and if they fail they will get additional help during the school year and the summer to help half of Maryland students may fail the exams the first time, according to the State Department of Education. Across the country, education reformers are watching closely to see how parents will respond when students start taking - and failing - those exams. They wonder whether parents will be so upset that they will demand a relaxing of standards; current 8th graders will take this exam; current 7th graders will be required to pass this exam in order to graduate from high school; during this session, the General Assembly will consider whether to help fund summer schools.
