This is an history of the Lipscomb family in America.  It was given to me by the late
Frank M. Lipscomb of Jacksonville, FL who spent several years researching and compiling
these records.  I would like to keep it updated as our family grows and changes so I would
appreciate e-mail from anyone with additions and corrections to this genealogy.
I also plan to add pictures of family members as they become available.

EXTRACTS FROM LIPSCOMB GENEALOGY

(Kept by Dabney Lipscomb, Columbus, Mississippi. Partly compiled
by Dr. Thomas Lipscomb of Shelbyville, Tennessee in 1877.)

GENERATIONS IN AMERICA:

Gen. I.

Joel Lipscomb came from Hampshire, England to Jamestown, Virginia in 1690. He settled in Spottsylvania County, Virginia in 1690 or soon after.  Joel Lipscomb fought with the Duke of Monmouth in England in 1685.  When the Duke's army was overthrown, Lipscomb escaped capture and finally, after many disasters, landed in Jamestown, VA in 1690.  He married and settled in Spottsylvania Country.  He raised two children, John and Thomas.

Gen. II. JOEL'S SONS:

1. John.
John went to Kentucky with Daniel Boone (?) and was probably killed by Indians having many encounters with them. It seems that he left a family there......some say he did not.

2. Thomas.
Thomas, born in 1700, married and raised 3 sons, John, Thomas and William, and a daughter.  The daughter never married.

III. 1. John 2. Thomas 3. William 4. A daughter

IV. 1. John married Miss Kimbrough.
       Sons: 1. Wyat,  2. Robert

Thomas married Miss Mary Smith and lived and died in Spottysylvania Country.  They were a frugal and prosperous pair and raised and educated seven children, 1. Joel 2. Nathan 3. David 4. John 5. William 6. Dabnay  7. Elizabeth.

David Lipscomb, the son of Thomas, remained in Virginia and married Martha Day.

His brother, John, married Judith Day, the sister of Martha Day, David's wife.  He moved to Louise County and raised a family.  Two of his children, Robert and Wyatt, moved to South Carolina in 1825.

Joel and Nathan moved to Abbeville County, SC in 1760 and settled near Old Cambridge.  Both raised large familes and are buried in the Lipscomb graveyard near their home.  Joel married before leaving Virginia and Nathan after coming to SC.  Old Cambridge is near Greenwood County.

William left VA with his brothers but his wagon broke down near Limestone Springs which gave him the opportunity to exime the country.  He liked it and decided to remain there where he married Elizabeth Smith.  He died there after raising six sons,: , 1. Thomas, 2. John, 3. David, 4. Nathan, 5. Smith 6, unknown, and two daughters Mellie and Nancy.

Dabney and Elizabeth never married.  They lived and died at the homestead in Spottsylvania County.

The descendants of Thomas Lipscomb took active parts in the Revolution.  John was a colonel and his command was disbanded in South Carolina after peace was declared.  The other sons won recognition from the government for their services as ashown by the archives in Washington, D.C.
