The family, with the thee oldest children, came to the States in1874, on the ship Holsatia, arriving in New York on May 21st. Karl who was six years old, was listed as four years in order to save on his fare. The family migrated to Buffalo, New York and Karl, the elder, started using the Americanized name of Charlie. Karl, my great-grandfather, became a sheetmetal worker and tinsmith. He died of a malignant tumor when he was 39 years old, leaving his wife with 5 children, ranging from 4 to 13 years old, to raise by herself. |

While Karl was in the hospital, suffering from terminal cancer, Eliza fell and injured her right knee. To save her leg, the surgeons removed the kneecap and let the joint fuse. Eliza did not let these things get her down. She moved her young family to Yonkers, to live with her sister, Elvira (or Elva), who was a physician there. Eliza studied dressmaking and design and when she was trained in the field, moved her family back to Westfield , and later to Buffalo, to raise them. |
