Undisturbed laying  in  the West Virginia State Archives in Charleston West Virginia  are nearly 4000 unclaimed Civil War medals . By the authority of  the state of West  Virginia these medals were presented to Union Veterans of West Virginia military units in 1866. These medals were unclaimed after the war because the state could locate these veterans. You can go through a application process if one of your ancestors is on the list.

I know because I was lucky enough to have claimed my Great grandfather Issac Wolf's medal.
