Jessie Hillis
Warren County native Jessie J. Hillis of Signal Mountain, 76, died unexpectedly in River Chase Hospital, Chattanooga, at 4 p.m. Thursday.
A son of the late James Worthington and Mary Martin Hillis, he was the husband of Aley Irene Hillis who preceded him in death Aug. 2, 1985.
He is survived by two sons, James Reggie and Neville Lane Hillis, both of Signal Mountain. He is also survived by brother Thurman Hillis of Centertown, sister Nettie Higgins of Nashville and three grandchildren.
Brownie Smith and Ed Irwin conducted services in the chapel of McMinnville Funeral Home at 3 p.m. Saturday. Interment was in Centertown Cemetery.

Signal Mountain resident Mrs. Aley Irene Hillis, 73, succumbed to a six-month illness in Alexia Health Care Center there at 4:10 p.m. Saturday.
A native of McMinnville and member of the Presbyterian Church, she was the wife of Jesse J. Hillis and a daughter of the late James and Mary Tennesee Young Carrick.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, James Reggie and Neville Lane Hillis, both of Signal Mountain. She is also survived by a brother and two sisters, Dallas Carrick and Mrs. Stella Carr of McMinnville, Mrs. Louisa Winnard of Oklahoma, three grand children and several nieces and nephews.
Rev. Ed Irwin will conduct services in McMinnville Funeral Home Chapel, the funeral home in charge, at 2:30 p.m. Burial will be in Centertown Cemetery.

Bill McMahan Swartwood, 81
Carthage resident and Centertown native Bill McMahan Swartwood, 81, died Feb. 10 at Carthage General Hospital after an extended illness.
A well-known floral designer, she owned and operated McMinnville Flower Shop and Hawkins Flower Shop in Woodbury for more than 30 years before her retirement in 1972. She was a 1935 graduate of Centertown High School, a member of the McMinnville Order of the Eastern Star and the Woodbury Church of Christ. She was the last surviving of nine children born to her parents, Charles and Minda Turner McMahan.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Hobie P. Swartwood in 1981 and siblings, Robert, Everette, Ben, Herschel and Preston McMahan, Juanita Massey, Loretta Hill and Stella Bratcher.
She is survived by daughter, Blanche Hillis Floyd; grandchildren and their
spouses, Sabra and Danny Hodge, and Kent and Paulette Floyd; great- grandchildren, Tyler and Katelyn Hodge, all of Carthage; step-children, Hobie P. Swartwood Jr. of Crofton, Md., and Jimmy Swartwood of Old Hickory; three step-grandchildren and one step-great-grandchild; sisters-in-law, Helen Swartwood Oack of Proctorville, Ohio and Nita McMahan of Jacksonville, Fla.; several nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Sanderson Funeral Home Carthage Chapel with Turner Pasuer and Elder Charles Allen Gentry officiating. Burial will follow at Centertown Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and Saturday from 10 a.m. until time of services at the Carthage Chapel. Sanderson Funeral Home Carthage Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
