JAMES SCHOOLCRAFT was b. June 27, 1688 in Lancaster, Lancashire, England. He m. MADELENA ? in Schoharie Co., NY and d. after 1741. His father was also named James.
Following are some exerpts from "Indian Agent and Wilderness Scholar - The Life of Henry Rowe Schoolcraft": Early in the 18th century, James Schoolcraft crossed the Atlantic to serve as a soldier in the British colony of New York. Although family tradition credits him with great deeds of valor, both on the continent and in the campaigns against Quebec, he first appears in surviving records as a deserter from the Albany garrison in the winter of 1711-1712. He subsequently received a pardon and returned to military service. Following the close of Queen Anne's War, he took up surveying and moved to the Schoharie district of Albany County where he married the only daughter of a German Palatine farmer and raised a family of seven or eight children."
