Notes for Ruth Evelyn Shultz:

Lynn Allen DeWitt's narrative about his mother, Ruth Evelyn Shultz, included in an ammended copy of Ruth's family cookbook:

Ruth, the "Grandma" of this cookbook, and Edwin were married on January 25, 1941 in Marion, Indiana. During World War II they resided in Warren, Ohio (Trumbull County) where their oldest children were born.  Following the war, they returned to Indiana (Lancaster Township, Huntington County) where their other children were born. In 1960, they moved to Grant County, Indiana. After this time Ruth became interested in the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), finding that at least one verifiable ancestor participated in the war for

American Independence,  (Nicholas Beaver also "Beiber" or "Beiver") reference being made in DAR Patriot Index, page 48.  Ruth became a member of the General Francis Marian chapter of the DAR, later becoming regent (president) of same.

"Grandma" began this genealogy with reference to her great - grandfather, William Beaver Shultz.  His mother, Mary Beaver (b. July 9, 1798 in Huntingdon Co, Pennsylvania d. Sept 28, 1858) was the daughter of Anthony Beaver and Susanna Clapper (b. April 1775  d. Sept 24, 1849).  Anthony Beaver (b. Jan 26, 1761 Huntingdon Co, Pennsylvania d. Sept 7, 1839), was the son of Nicholas Beaver (b. March 8, 1739 in Alsace-Lorraine, France d. March 29, 1812 and is buried near Chambersburg, Pennsylvania) and his wife Mary Wathkin

( b. circa 1740  d. circa 1765).  They were married Sept 27, 1757. Nicholas Beaver's service during the Revolutionary War was as a private 7th class, under Captain Samuel Royer, 8th Battalion of Cumberland County (Pennsylvania) Militia. He also is listed as a Unknown 7th class, Fifth Company, First Battalion of Cumberland County Militia as of August 1, 1780. Nicholas Beaver would have been Grandma's Great -great -great -great grandfather.  Ruth was diagnosed as having Ameotropic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), more commonly known

as Lou Gherig's disease, in the fall of 1992.  She passed away on December 22, 1993 in the Marion General Hospital, Marion, Indiana, at 11:40 AM.

Notes for Jacob L. Myers:

Tim DeWitt assumption:

My great-aunt Virginia (wife of my grandpa Myers' brother Irven) gave me the name and birth/death dates of my g-grandfather Myers (Jacob L. Myers), the first name of his wife (Susanna) and where they were married, Waupecong, IN.  She also gave me the name of my g-g-grandfather, Jacob W. Myers.  After discovering the information contained on Jim and Sue Hammer's Home Page about a JOHN W. MYERS and his son JACOB WILSON MYERS, I am certain that JOHN W. is the father of my JACOB W.  Aunt Virginia told me that JACOB L. had married ANNA METZLER in Waupecong, IN, not far from my boyhood home in Amboy, IN.  The information on the mentioned web page states that both JOHN W. and JACOB WILSON MYERS died in Waupecong.  I remember my grandfather talking a great deal about Waupecong, and took me there for several visits when I was six to eight years old.  It is my assumption that it is unlikely, given the amount of matching information that I've found, and understanding exactly how small the town Waupecong really is, that the MYERS' mentioned in Jim and Sue Hammer's Home Page could be any other men than my g-g-grandfather and g-g-g-grandfather

Christian Stahley's farm in Nappanee, Elkhart County, IN, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is now called, "Amish Acres".  See their web site at:  http://www.amishacres.com/

Christian Stahly, his mother and brothers were the first Amish settlers in IN.  Christian bought the farm that is Amish Acres for his son, Moses.  Source:  Amish Acres - Richard L. Pletcher, President <rpletche@npcc.net>

Christian Stahly was born in Rhinebron, Germany, July 27, 1820. His parents were Henry and Barbara Stahly, natives of the same town. In November, 1835, they left Germany, landing in New York, and came to Starke County, OH, where they spent the winter, and in the spring removed to Wayne County, OH; her Christian lived eight years, then came to this county. He was married in Wayne County, OH, February 3, 1842, to Miss Fannie Haussauer, daughter of Peter and Mary haussauer, of Wayne County, OH, wh was born August 27, 1822; her father came from Germany and was among the first to settle in Eastern OH. Mr. and Mrs. Stahly have a family of 7 children: Peter, born October 2, 1842; Barbara, Februrary 25, 1844; John, Setember 23, 1846; Moses, July 27, 1849; Magdalena, November 10, 1851; Solomon, July 19, 1853; and Samuel, July 28, 1858.

Mr. Stahly entered his farm in this township in October, 1840, and moved on it in July, 1842; since that time this farm has been his home; her his children were born, and lived until they married and found homes for themselves. In his financial affairs Mr. Stahly has been quite successful' he has a pleasant home and a good farm of 157 ares, besides helping his children to secure homes. He first entered 80 acres, and when he settled on it there were but two settlers within a mile. The roads at this time were not cut out, and he was forced to cut his own road for two miles in order to reach his land. He has long been a member of the Amish Church.

Christian bought the 80 acres that is today Amish Acres for his son Moses. The first buildings were constructed in 1873. Moses' father-in-law, Noah Nissley, purchased the farm when Moses moved to Reno County, Kansas, and built the main house in 1893. Manases Kuhns, Nissley's son-in-law took over  the farm and remained its owner until it was sold at auction following his death. Today the Stahly-Nissley-Kuhns farm is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Christian S. Stahly - Olde Buffalo Inn Bed & Breakfast - Nappanee, IN, picturesque with its majestic 10,000 square foot red banked barn, red brick sidewalks, traditional windmill, all of this enclosed by a classic white wooden picket fence. The history of the Inn extends over a 150 year period. Originally built in 1840 by a pioneer farmer, the house precedes the establishment of Nappanee in 1874. By the turn of the century it had acquired the name "buffalo farm" during a time when the bison were characteristic of the area. The barn echoes with a history of its own as many of the surrounding Amish families once attended church here.  Today the original farmhouse still exists, after having endured restorations two decades ago to preserve its historical character.  Also at that time, additional rooms were constructed to surround the original part of the house, thus providing the modern conveniences of today.

Monroe County, OH History

                                Foreword

This is a history of most of the eighteen townships of Monroe County, OH. The material contained herein was accumulated from the "History of Monroe County, OH," by H.H. Hardesty & Co., Publishers, dated 1882, articles from various newspaper files, and items written by interested individuals. Collating and printing of the history was made possible by the efforts of Mr. Harold P. Haley, secretary of the Woodsfield Chamber of Commerce, Woodsfield, OH. Booklet compiled in Woodsfield during the year 1969.

                    Switzerland Township

Switzerland Township was organized on January 1, 1827, containing 28 square miles. It embraces 12 stations of original Township 4 of Range 4 and 12 sections 15, 21, 27, and 33 and parts of other sections. It is the Northeastern Township of Monroe County.

Big Run and Johnston's Run empty into the OH River and drain the Eastern part of Switzerland Township. Cumming's Run empties into the OH River in Salem Township but has its source in Switzerland Township. Negro Run and Payne Run, branches of Sunfish Creek, drain the Southern and the Western parts of Switzerland Township. Cat's Run, a branch of Captina Creek, drains the Northern part of Switzerland Township.

The soil in Switzerland Township is formed largely of disintegrated shale and sandstone. It is naturally less rich than most limestone soils but the German and the Swiss farmers did wonders with the cultivation of the land, making it the best farm land in the State of OH. In 1880, almost every farm had a small vineyard of fruits. In contrast with the slovenly character of much of our native American farming, there is an air of neatness and thrift.

Early settlements of Switzerland Township were made in the Valley of Big Run and along the OH River. John Keller was engaged in opening an improvement on the head waters of Big Run soon after settlements were begun in this Township. At that time, he lived in Belmont County which was some distance from his place of employment. His two daughters, aged eight and ten, carried his dinner to him. One day, they missed the right path and became lost in the forest. People from the surrounding settlements searched for them and, after three days, found them on Negro Run, not far from Sunfish Creek. In their terror upon finding they were lost, they dropped the basket containing the dinner and lived on roots for three days.

--  "History of Monroe County, OH," by H.H. Hardesty & Co., Publishers, 1882

-- It is assumed that the John Keller written about in the  "History of Monroe County, OH," is the same John Keller listed in this ancestry report.  This assuption is based on the following reasoning:

1) It is known that the John Keller listed in this genealogical account was married to Katharina Kenreich and had at least one daughter, Margaretha Keller (b. 2/12/1818 in OH).

2) The historical account states that Swizerland Twp., Monroe County, OH was organized on January 1, 1827.  It also states that "John Keller was engaged in opening an improvement on the head waters of Big Run soon after settlements were begun in this Township" making the date of the incident spoken of in the account most likely Btw. 1827 - 1828.

3) The historical account states that the John Keller was the father of two daughters, age 10, and 8.

4) Margareth would very likely have been the ten year old daughter of John spoken about in this historical account.

Notes for Henry Shultz:

[Gary Schmermund <gleesch@worldnet.att.net]

According to the History of Huntingdon and Blair Counties, PA, Henry Shultz came to Lincoln Township, Huntington County at a "very early date," probably about 1797. Huntingdon County had been formed out of Bedford County in 1787, formed, in turn in 1771 from Cumberland County. Lincoln Township, in Huntingdon County, was formed out of a larger Hopewell Township.

Henry settled and reared his family on a farm in Lincoln Township, south of Borough of Marklesburg, (James Creek P.O. )owned in 1883 by David Fouse, about a mile and a quarter south of Marklesburg. He resided there until his death in 1830.

Peter I was born abt 1716 in Switzerland and came to York Co, PA.  He was a Mennonite as were many of his descendants."

Source:  http://momzhome.suite.net/8b.html

Peter Blosser, the second, son of Peter the First, was born in PA, March 19,1752, and having determined to leave home as stated before, he packed all his property in a bag having an opening in the middle on the order of saddle pockets, and bidding adieu to his native state, he started for Virginia where he arrived about the year 1776; he was married to Magdalene, daughter of Blastius Bear.

Taken from "Genealogical History of the Blosser Family as Known in America," by S H Blosser Dayton Virginia Dated in 1903.   As far back as I can trace by careful inquiry, it appears that Peter Blosser (whom I will call Peter the First) came from Switzerland-place and province not known to me. It is handed down to me by tradition, that he became singer and jester to some great person or nobleman of that country,  but in time of war he escaped and went to France, where he stayed for a while, but war coming on in France he left that country and came to America, August 27, 1739, in the ship "Snow Betsy"  Richard Buden, Commander, sailing from Rotterdam, Holland-last from Deal-190 passenger, and settled in the state of PA, at a creek called Cadoris, near Little York in York county, where it is supposed he married and had sons and daughters born unto him. He was also an ordained minister in the Mennonite Church. In the course of time his wife died, and his sons becoming somewhat unmanageable, he said he would get them a cross stepmother-so marrying for his second wife a Miss Knicely, who was sure enough a cross wife, on whose account he had to give up his ministry, (he at one time owned two farms, but lost the greater part of them,) and her stepchildren scarcely being able to live with her left the parental roof as they became of age and went to Virginia, and settled in Page county near Stonyman near Blue Ridge.

Notes for William Addington, Sr.:

William Addington was born in London, England, and grew up to young manhood in that city.  He had excellent educational opportunities, and in consequence thereof, acquired a good education.  About the time he reached the age of twenty, a steady stream of emigrants was then flowing from the city of London and other parts of Great Britain Into the North American Colonies.  Young Addington was also seized with the desire to join the throng and emigrate to America, much against the wish of his parents. They tried to dissuade him from going but failed.  At length his father, seeing that he was determined on making the adventure, furnished him with money to pay his passage overseas and supply his needs for some time afterward. On landing at Norfolk, he traveled widely through eastern VA and North Carolina, and finally located near Culpepper Courthouse, Va.  Here he married Margaret Cromwell, about the year 1774.  When the Revolutionary War began, William Addington volunteered, and was made a commissary officer in Washington's Army.  He served in this capacity until the Surrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown, October 19, 1781, an event which he witnessed.  Soon after the War, William Addington moved to Caswell County, N.C., where he remained a short time.  Hearing of a rich country in southwest VA where the land was good, the range fine, and bear, deer, and wild turkeys in abundance he decided to seek this wonderful country.  In the summer of 1785, he, in company with twelve other families, come to Russell County, VA where he located in the Vally, north of the mountain, near Hyter's Gap.
