The Smith's go to Bali
Here's Tom and Chanel
in Monkey Forest, which is in Ubud. You can't see the monkeys, but there were hundreds, running around freely in this park.
We bought bananas at the entrance and hand-fed the monkeys.
But these were no ordinary monkeys, they were cute, furry monsters! We were chased, grabbed, and cornered. We
saw one monkey actually break open a plastic bag a woman was holding and run off with the whole bunch.
One day,
we hired a car and driver to take us to the volcano on the Northern side of the island.
Here we are standing in front of the volcano, which is called Mount Batur. Also not visible in
this picture are the dozen or so people trying to sell us sarongs, t-shirts, pencils, etc., even while the picture
was being taken. One man down on the street behind us is telling us to buy a chess set from him for "$10 American, please, please?".
Here's Chanel at the street market in Kuta, the kitten belongs to one of the shopkeepers. Chanel had just bargained for the first
time and came away with a picture frame for half the asking price. We think she's already got the hang of it...
Another day we took a boat
to Lembogan Island and saw how the people living on the island make their living growing and harvesting seaweed. This is the only hotel
on the island, and rooms are $5 a night!
We saw these
women everywhere while driving around one Sunday afternoon. They are on their way to the temples to
make these fruit offerings to the gods.
Tom and Stacia
on Kuta Beach. Surprisingly, just about anything can be had on Bali beaches - sarongs, hair braiding, massage, conch shell, food.
This day was very hot so we didn't stay long and soon left in search of air conditioning...
Mengwi Temple. Like good tourists, we came
prepared to wear sarongs and take off our shoes but we weren't able to walk through the temple, only
around.
