We left Minnesota for Australia on 5/3/99. We had a 12-hr flight to Tokyo, where we had a 2 hr layover. From there we had a 7 hr flight to Singapore - we were very glad to be there! We landed in Singapore at approx 1AM and took a London cab (meaning=huge for all of our luggage!) to our hotel, the Sheraton. Upon checking in, we were WIDE awake and ordered room service after looking over a very strange menu. After chowing on some spaghetti and quesadillas, we went to bed at about 2:30AM. We were up very early the next day and began walking! It's very hot and humid in Singapore but very pretty, very much like a rainforest. We headed toward Old Orchard Road, the main strip in Singapore. After stopping at Burger King for a breakfast for Chanel, we continued on Orchard. We were helped by a couple of very nice Singaporans (?) and caught a bus to Chinatown where we took in the sights! Here's a picture of Tom and Chanel in a road overpass in Chinatown:

We stopped for lunch at one of the mall food courts. This was not a food court like we had seen before! Luckily, there were pictures of everything and we pretty much pointed at what we wanted and it turned out pretty good. Tom was very brave and had fish but I stuck with the veggies only. We did some shopping and we were constantly hounded by shopkeepers, 'please sir/madam, our shop has the best deals'. We finally relented and bought some headphones for Chanel's CD player. Here's Chanel with one of the shopkeepers, he and Chanel were about the same height (and of course, it took some convincing on my part to get her to stand near him!):

From there, we hailed a cab and went to the 70th floor of the Westin Hotel, the tallest hotel in the world! The views from the 70th floor were amazing, we were able to see the financial district, Orchard Road, Little India, the Marina and Chinatown. We left the hotel and walked to Clarke Quay and took a boat along the Singapore River. Here's Chanel with another 'friend' in Singapore, this person was quite talented being able to smoke, drink, drive and talk on the CB all at the same time!

Here's me on the boat - I was very hot but very happy to be there!:

After that time, we went back to the hotel to shower again and re-pack our 6 suitcases. We took a cab to the airport at 4PM and were complete zombies! I was ready to fly again just to sleep! We took Singapore airlines to Melbourne, another 7 hour flight. Tom was happy to fly Singapore airlines but I wasn't sure why until we boarded! We had much of the plane to ourselves, which meant stretching out in our own rows (ahh!), received champagne/oj, our own tv monitors with a choice of 6+ movies, we were given socks and toothpaste - nice! We landed in Melbourne and flew directly to Adelaide, where we spent a couple of days, then back to Melbourne for a couple of days, then to Perth. Here's a picture I took of Chef Chanel on the beach:
