This young buck was shot on the first Monday of the November 1991 season. I was sitting in my tree stand on this particular day and it was raining quite heavily. I had seen a large doe with two skippers at just about 7 a.m. and was soaked to the bone by 9 a.m. I decided to climb down out of my stand and partake in some still hunting through a large stand of fir trees and hardwood mix. I had just crossed the old county road, which is an old discontinued skidder road. I had traveled another 100 yards or so East into the woods when I jumped this young buck, which was feeding in the firs. The deer bolted straight away from me and as I shouldered my rifle and fired he cut to the right. I killed a nice pine tree but missed the buck. Then to my surprise, just as suddenly as the buck had bolted, he came to a dead stop and started feeding!! To this day I have never had this type of behavior repeated. The buck started feeding on mushroom shoots and even raised his right back leg to scratch up behind his ear. The buck then shook some of the rain off his coat and just looked in my direction as though nothing had ever happened, as though I were a ghost and had vanished into the woods. I placed one fatal shot into the white throat patch of the buck killing him instantly. I thanked the Maker for allowing me once more to fill my tag and my freezer. I had certainly been blessed with some fortunate luck on this day. Lesson learned: Never cease to be amazed by the events that unfold before you!
