May 31, 2003 The Cunningham and Patton Families were very intertwined in the records of South Carolina, North Carolina and Tennessee. For the most part North Carolina and Tennessee kept very detailed records, however some of the information here doesn't agree with all account of information that I have seen. Some records show name as CONIGAM. Much of this information was provided by a family member that later indicated that he thought some of this to be incorrect. 1A JOHN CUNNINGHAM (Sr.) b. 1685 d. 1750 ? Hanover, Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania m. ? John was alive in 1750 and paid taxes, his estate was inventoried on April 27, 1760 so he may have died later that 1750. 3 Children: William, John, Humphrey 1b WILLIAM CUNNINGHAM (Sr.) b. 1720 d. 1753 m. March 10, 1806 Buncombe County, North Carolina m. RHODA M. SIMERAL (SIMMERAL, SUMMERVILLE ?) June 29, 1752 in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania b. March 1733 Donegal County, N. Ireland d. Jan. 12, 1831 Wartrace, Bedford Co., TN Humphrey is probably buried in unmarked grave in Patton Meeting House Cemetery, Swannanoa, North Carolina. Rhoda is buried at Couch/Patton Cemetery, Kellertown TN, just east of Wartrace. Humphrey and Rhoda were married at Hanover twp, Lancaster Co. PA. Records show that Humphrey and his brother John were in Hanover Twp. PA before 1752 and Humphrey moved to York District SC (then considered NC) before 1766, settling on Allisons Creek. Between 1785-1790 his family, along with Matthew and Thomas Patton families, moved to Swannanoa River Valley in Buncombe Co., North Carolins. Rhoda moved to Bedford Co., Tenn., after Humphrey died in 1806, and lived with her son James until he died, then with Jame's widow Sally until Sally's death and then with a granddaughter. Rhoda's father was JAMES SIMMERAL. Rhoda's mother was MARGARET SIMERAL (MARGRET WARE, WIER, WEAR ?) who later married GEORGE DAVIDSON, her m(2), and became the parents of WILLIAM LEE DAVIDSON, the Rev. General who fell in battle at Cowan's Ford on the Catawba River in NC while fighting British General Corwallis. There is an interesting marker at the site. Davidson College in the beautiful little North Carolina town of Davidson is named for the General Davidson. 8 Children: George, James, John, Rhoda, Mary, Sarah, Katherine, Margaret 1c GEORGE CUNNINGHAM (Sr.) b. April 7, 1753 Rowan County, North Carolina d. Aug. 3, 1837 Buncombe Co. Feb. 3, 1847 It is clear that George did have a son named Humphrey. One account that I have seen indicates that this Humphrey was the son of Humphrey and Rhoda instead of George's son Humphrey. If this were true, then this info should be listed as 9c under Humphrey. A family member provided this information and indicates that this may be the correct placement of this information. <5> *** See PATTON <5> *** 3d RHODA CUNNINGHAM b. 1780 ca d. after April 1802 m.
