June 1, 1999 COWSER1.TXT file information furnished by Linda Jones (e-mail address is llcjones@gower.net) Every Cowser family in the country who arrived before the American Revolution has been traced back to the South Carolina families. The Tennessee and Kentucky families have all been traced back to South Carolina. Only one Cowser family appears to have migrated to South Carolina from another part of the U.S.(Virginia), all the others immigrated into South Carolina from County Armagh, Ireland. The records of South Carolina indicate the Cowser family first settled in the Scot-Irish settlement in the Waxhaw District, Lancaster County, South Carolina. The Lancaster records were burned during the civil war by General Sherman's troops and the wills and probates for the early Cowsers do not exist, but the graveyards and land records do. The tombstones indicate the place of birth for all Cowser immigratants to be either Ireland or County Armagh, Ireland. The tombstones and land records show the lack of conformity in the spelling of the surname Cower. Cowser can be found spelled a variety of ways even within the same document. The most common spellings in Landcaster County, South Carolina are Cowser, Cowsert, Cousar, Cousart, Couser, and Cousert. All early Cowsers are buried in Irish Presbyterian Church cemeteries. It should be noted that Armagh is in the northern part of Ireland. Many Scottish Presbyterians settled in this area. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 1A THOMAS LEE COWSER b. 1778 Lynchburg, VA. m. RACHEL WOOD b. May 4, 1782 York County South Carolina His line of Cowser migrated from Va. to York County, South Carolina.. from there to Mississippi or Alabama, to Columbia Co. Arkansas, to Clairborne Parish, La., to Hopkins Co., Texas. All of their children were born in Youk County South Carolina. 10 Children: James, John, Thomas, Millard, Samuel, Joseph, Ruby, Louisa Elizabeth, Harvey 1B JAMES H. COWSER b. Before 1863 Union County, Arkansas b. ? d. ? Burial: Clover Hill Cemetery, near Quitman, Wood County, Texas In 1827, at the age of 23 James H. marries Louisa Watson in Christian County, Kentucky. The 1827 Christian County, Kentucky Tax List shows JAMES H. COWSER 1 male over 21, 1 horse and mule. It also shows ROBERT WATSON 525 acres on Flat Lick Water Course, 1 male over 21, 1 black, 9 horses and mules. The 1837 Mississippi Territorial Census (later Lowndes County, Mississippi) is the first discovered record of a RICHARD COWSER. I once thought Richard to be Jame's father but according to others, Wilma Brown and a book by Billy Bruce on the Cowser's.. Thomas was Jame's father. Richard could be an uncle (Thomas brother perhaps) or some other relation. Richard is living next door to ELI WATSON, brother-in-law to James H. No other Cowser or Watson appears in the area at this time. James H. Cowser and the rest of the Waston family arrive in Lowndes County, Mississippi shortly after 1837. Between 1844-1850 Richard, James H. and some of the Watson family members move to Arkansas. They appear in the 1850 and 1860 census in Union County, Arkansas. Land records indicate: 1857 - 01 July - Union County, Arkansas Land Patents James H. The 1860 Union County, Arkansas census also shows living with this family: S.J. DENTON age 10 born in Mississippi, S.C. DENTON age 8 born in Mississippi, and ISAAC DENTON age 5 born in Mississippi. James H. and family are found in Wood County, Texas during the 1870 census. These three Denton's are still living with the family now in Texas. Also, 1870, there is a M.A. COWSER born about 1834 in Alabama (listed as MAE COWSER in the 1880 Wood County, Texas census), this is probably m(3) MARYANNE E. ?. The relationship between the DENTON people and James H. Cowser needs to be determined, these could be Sarah m(2) or Maryanne m(3)'s family from another marraige? 12 Children: m(1) John, Sarah, Narcissa, Robert, William, Martha, Chris, Thomas, Isabella m(2) Joseph m(3) Tennessee, D.
