The Crousers in Pennsylvania

There appear to have been several Crouser families in Pennsylvania. Were they related to one another? We are trying to find out. Check back here from time to time to see what our research is revealing.

Frederick Crouser and Magdalena Lape
in Mercer County

Frederick CROUSER and his wife Magdalena LAPE came from Alsace in 1837 and arrived in the port of Baltimore on the ship Glide which sailed from La Havre. They settled in Mercer County. Their children were:
  1. Caroline CROUSER - born 1820 - married Elliott DAVIS. They lived in Sandy Lake, Pennsylvania. She and most of her children moved to Cleveland OH after Elliott's death. Their children were:

    2. Jacob DAVIS
    3. Walter H. DAVIS (1851- ) married Caroline ("Callie") _____ .
    4. Samuel G. DAVIS (1853-1909) married Mary J. ____.
    5. Hetty DAVIS (1855- ) was not married. School teacher.
    6. Sarah J. DAVIS (1858-1935) was not married. School teacher.
    7. Henry DAVIS (1860- ) married Bertine ELWELL
      1. Caroline DAVIS (1880- ) married John F. MC SWEENEY
    8. Oliver H.P. DAVIS (1862-1928) married Eva L. HILL. Their children were:

  2. Jacob CROUSER - born 1822 - married Emiline BURKE. They lived in Millegeville, Pennsylvania. Their children were:
    1. Frank CROUSER
    2. Christine CROUSER (1857-1902) married Jay CARPENTER.
    3. Harmon CROUSER (1859-1917) married Martha J. CAMERON. Their children were:
      1. Clarence R. CROUSER (1884- ) married Bertha MC CRACKEN

  3. Frederick B. CROUSER - born 1829 - married Mary Ann HEASLEY. They lived in New Lebanon, Pennsylvania. Their children were:
    1. John Godfrey CROUSER (1854-1873) died young in hunting accident.
    2. Elizabeth Magdalene CROUSER (1856-1941)married Cyrus JEWELL. Their children were:
      1. Owen Dennis JEWELL

    3. Jacob Elliott CROUSER (1858-1939) married Anna May ARTERS and Hannah HOGUE/GILLILAND. He and Anna May had one child.

    4. Mary Jane CROUSER (1861-1943) married Franklin ROWLAND. (see Rowland ancestry) Their children were:

    5. Lewis Perry CROUSER (1863-1941) married Nancy MARSHALL. Their children were:

    6. Elmer Ellsworth CROUSER (1866-1956) married Hannah PADEN and Myrtle HALLABAUGH.

    Along the way we have accumulated a few pictures of Crousers, including one of a Crouser family reunion held in Vienna, Ohio, in 1928. The people we have been able to identify were some of the children and grandchildren (and their spouses) of Frederick B. Crouser of Mercer County, Pennsylvania. There are still many who we have not identified. Take a look and see if you recognize any of them, and then please let us know who you can name.

Jacob CROUSER was the father of:

      Sue Crouser and her sister Jennie lived together after Jennie's husband died shortly after their marriage. They worked as seamstresses and went from home to home doing whatever sewing was needed.

John Chrouser of Mercer County

John CHROUSER (born about 1819) died in Jefferson TWP, Mercer County, PA, 20 Nov 1879. His will mentions his widow, Elizabeth (born about 1828), and children
  1. Alvin CHROUSER (born about 1847)
  2. Minnie A. CHROUSER (Mrs. Thomas KELLY)
  3. Caroline CHROUSER (Mrs. Samuel CUMMINGS)
  4. Susan CHROUSER (Mrs. P. Q. McMANUS)
  5. Jennie CHROUSER (Mrs. Robert CRAIG)
  6. Elizabeth CHROUSER (Mrs.Thomas KELLY)
  7. Sadie CHROUSER
  8. Milton CHROUSER.

The birth dates of John and Elizabeth are calculated from the ages listed in the 1850 census of Delaware TWP, Mercer County, PA. The census also lists a one month old female named Mary E. Crouser. She apparently died before her father.

Adam Crouser of Mercer County

Adam CROUSER lived in Jefferson TWP, Mercer County, PA. He was born in about 1788 in PA. His wife, Susan or Susanna, was born in about 1796 in PA. Their children appear to be:

  1. Anna CHROUSHAR (1826-1841) is buried in Pearson Cemetery, Jefferson TWP.
  2. Samuel CROUSER (1829-1896) died of consumption in Jefferson TWP.
  3. Lewis CROUSER
    It is possible they also had a son named George CROUSER who was born in about 1815.

Johannes Kraushaar/Chroushore of Westmoreland County

Johannes KRAUSHAAR was born in 1735 in Germany and died in Westmoreland County, PA, in 1790. He came to the US on the ship Priscilla in 1750. His known residences were Ft. Allen PA (1774) and Hempfield TWP, Westmoreland County, PA. His wife was Maria Appolonia. Their child was:
  1. George KRAUSHAAR(1765-1814). George married Magdalena (Margaret) MEYER. To George and Magdalena were born:
    1. John George CROUSHORE (1800-1848) married Anna Margaretta BAUGHMAN. Their children were:
      1. Adam KRAUSHAAR (1826- ) married Maria ROOSE. Their children were:
        1. Henry George CROUSHORE, the son of Adam Croushore and Maria ROOSE, was born in 1854. He married Dinah Margaret HENRY and they lived in Westmoreland County, PA. Their children were:
          1. David CROUSHORE (1879-1947) married Ellen Jane MORRISON
          2. Ella Blanche CROUSHORE (1880-1964) married Wesley Benjamin COMPTON
          3. William CROUSHORE (1882- ) married Mary
