The van dan Acker family came to the United States by way of Australia. The family story is that Christain van dan Acker came by way of the ship Amphin. The ship's mast was broken in a storm, Christain helped in the repair and was asked to stay on as the ship's carpenter. Instead, he and his family decided to stay in the United States and made a home in Brooklyn. His first job was to finish the tower on old St. Patrick's Cathedral, which he took on condition that he have the privilege of making the altar. From Brooklyn, they made their way across the country to Iowa.
