Genealogy

Since my mother died in 1995, I have begun to appreciate my family more and renewed my research of my family tree - not the easiest thing to do from Uzbekistan or Singapore, or so I thought...

My family roots are in Yorkshire, but my maternal grandmother (Edith Annie TORDOFF) was born in Carlisle, Cumbria, and my paternal grandfather (William George PRATT) in Hitchin, Hertfordshire.

I have recently joined the Bradford Family History Society, and find the various newsgroups (especially soc.genealogy.uk+ireland and soc.genealogy.surnames) on the Internet quite stimulating, and of course would be pleased to hear from anyone interested in genealogy. I have set up a home page for anyone interested in the name Tordoff, and a (better) page exists for the name Pratt.

To my delight I recently discovered (via the Internet) that there is a LDS Family History Centre in Singapore, only 10 minutes' drive from my home. The staff are really helpful and friendly, and I have managed to find a lot of dates for known relatives, and several new ancestors. Researching in Singapore (at least using the IGI) is much easier for me than being in the UK!

I have also just started to research the life of a former distinguished citizen of Singapore, Thomas Oxley, for his grandson.

I use Family Tree Maker for recording family details.

There are so many useful sites on genealogy on the 'Net, but I recommend Genealogy's Most Wanted as a good jumping off point and Cyndi's List of Genealogy Sites on the Internet as as almost inexhaustable source. A dedicated genealogy search engine is now available, I Found It! Genealogy Search Engine.
