Seek info on my g-g-grandparents John & Joanna (RAWLEY/RALEIGH?) CALLANAN (their ancestors & descendants too!). Family oral history has them coming from the Old Head of Kinsale region of Co. Cork Ireland to Boston, MA USA. All their children were born in Boston: Edward John (b. 1867), Louisa Joseph, John, Bernard, Richard, Timothy James (b. 1862). Edward John Callanan (my g-grandfather) married Helena Clare MURPHY of So. Boston in 1893. Timothy James married twice, first to Catherine Carroll in 1886, then to Mary Murphy in 1889. Unsure if Timothy had any surviving children. Mary MURPHY CALLANAN might prove a tie between my Boston CALLANANS and the many Hopkinton MA CALLANANS. Can only confirm Edward John and Timothy James by birth certificates and Richard by death Certificate. Any help is appreciated!

My g-grandfather, John CALLANAN (c1840-1875) "appeared" in Melbourne, Vic. Australia when he married Catherine CARDIFF on 25 Jan 1873. His marriage certificate states his name as CALNAN but all other documentation (and our family thereafter) used the spelling CALLANAN. John's parents were stated as Michael CALLANAN and Mary CASEY, and his birthplace as "Cork, Ireland". His age was stated as 30. My grandfather, Michael John CALLANAN, was born to John and Catherine the following year on 27 Apr 1874 at Melbourne. John CALLANAN's age was stated as 33 on his sons birth registration. The following year John CALLANAN died on 28 May1875 and his death registration states his age as 36!! His death was registered by Cornelius SCANNELL who identified himself as "Cousin of the deceased". Cornelius' parents were Michael SCANNELL and Anastasia CALLANAN. Because of the early death of my g-grandfather John CALLANAN in 1875 and the subsequent remarriage of my g-grandmother Catherine (CARDIFF) CALLANAN in 1877 to Arthur McMahon PATTISON, my grandfather never knew his father and grew up amongst his 10 Pattison brothers and sisters. Therefore, very little is known of John CALLANAN (c1840-1875) other than that he was a seaman (his occupation was stated as "Marine Stoker" - hence no record of him on ships passenger lists). Direct descendants of the son of John CALLANAN in Australia (Michael John "Jack" CALLANAN married Lucy Maud HOGAN 24 Apr 1920) are John Larkin CALLANAN (1921-1974) - married11 Jan 1947 Eileen O'DONOGHUE (6 sons, 3 daughters) William James "Bill" CALLANAN (1922-) - married 13 Aug 1955 Patricia BARKER (3 sons, 2 daughters) Bernard Michael "Bernie" CALLANAN (1923-1989) - my dad - married14 Sep 1946 Rita Adrienne NEALE (8 daughters) Michael CALLANAN (1923-stillborn), Kathleen Mary "Kath" CALLANAN (1925-) - married 14 Feb 1947 Kenneth ROONEY, (8 daughters), Kevin Cardiff CALLANAN - married 10 Jan 1953 Patricia PATTISON (2 sons, 3 daughters).

Thomas CALLANAN and Maria KILROY, both of Ireland, gave birth to at least one son, Michael CALLANAN b. abt 1842 in Co. Tipperary, Ireland. Michael is known to have immigrated to "North America" in 1850, perhaps with the Thomas E. BRENNAN and Margaret DUNN family to the London, Ontario, Canada region. Nothing is known of Michael until his enlistment in the US 1st Infantry in 1866 at NY City. Later, he married Mary Ann BRENNAN, dau of Thomas and Margaret. They settled in Fort Gratiot, St. Clair Co, MI from 1879 until his death in 1924. Children of Michael and Mary Ann are: Mary Ann, Thomas Francis, John Henry, Daniel Michael, George Peter, Margaret, and Edward. Am seeking any information on siblings or ties in Ireland. All known descendants of Michael have been identified. Do you know of my CALLANAN line?

Peter Xavier Callanan

My grandfather Sydney CALLANAN lived as the town chemist (pharmacist) in Beaudesert until his death in 1963. He was born in a town called Charters Towers Australia. Many of his siblings spelled their names CALLINAN where he spelt his Callanan. His parents both arrived from Ireland last century during the Diaspora to look for gold in Australia. As an aside there was a Callanan wounded but survived during the Eureka Stockade uprising in Victoria Australia. Most of my family details are situated elsewhere so this is much briefer than is possible.

My Grand father Sidney Francis Callanan was born in Charters Towers, QLD, Aus on 10 April 1887 and died in 1963. He married Mary Scoble Andrews on 9/11/1910. I have no history of Mary Andrews. Sidney Callanan's parents were Michael Callanan and Catherine Lerninan from Kilrush, Co Clare, Irl. Sidney and Mary had seven children:
- Shelia Gordon (nee Callanan)
- Sidney Callanan
- Frank Callanan (Deceased)
- Brian Xavier Callanan (1922 - 1972) (My Father)
- Eleanor Callanan
- Paul Callanan
- Peter Michael Callanan.
A quote from Sidney Callanan's obituary in the newspaper, "One of the most respected identities in the Beaudesert community, Mr. Sidney Francis Callanan, passed away last Sunday morning while perparing to attend Mass at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church. At the requiem Mass on Monday afternoon, Mons. O. B. Steels, M.B.E. spoke of the late gentleman as a wonderful father to his children, a beloved friend and a splendid example of Catholic manhood who led a truly Christian life."

My earliest Callanan is Michael Callanan of Kilrush, Co. Clare Ireland. Looking for anyone with information about this family. I'm particularly interested in Callanan history in Ireland and information about immigration patterns of Callanns to Australia.

A note: At the age of 17 years, Sidney's Great Grandchild Rebecca Anne Callanan (My Daughter) had success in her chosen sport, rowing, by being a member of the winning Junior Women's Four at the State Titles. She hopes for more success at the senior level.

Michael CALLANAN was born 30 Sept. 1823 in the city of Cork to James & Mary (Ambrose) CALLANAN. He married Ellen HORGAN on 31 May 1845 and they had six children. He left Ireland and took the whole family to St. Louis, Missouri, USA. I was very fortunate to go to Ireland with my husband in 1985. The Irish people were so very kind and helpful. I was lucky enough to find three generations of family records at St. Finn Barr's Catholic Church in the city of Cork. But it was just the day before we had to leave. I know there is so much more in those Catholic records. My husband has promised to take me back some day. I have done a fair share of research on the Callanan/Callinan family. My grandfather was from Co. Carlow. I found many CALLINANs there and in Co. Cork. Obviously there are many different spellings. Many of my cousins spell it CALLANAN and others CALLINAN. My father's cousin was a nun in Ireland and researched the family name back to the 1300s. I used to live in So. Boston, Mass., USA, and in the neigboring town of Sommerville there is a road called "Callanan Hill." This is not due to my family as the road has been called that for about 100 years and my family immigrated around 1930 to New Jersey, USA. I have been to Ireland several times and have done quite a bit of research.
