I guess I was lucky, no scratches, but figure I got a Brown Heart for dysentery (remember that s---!) Well aware of the nightmares and the guilt, show me a combat medic who isn't though. 14 weeks was just not enough training, and I really don't believe
here is ever enough. You apparently have stayed close to the medical field. I RAN from it my friend! I never wanted to be put to that test again. Guilt is one heavy cross to bear! However, lately I have been finding my old comrades, and communicating
with them after all these years, and met with a few in December of '99. Meeting more in Sept. 2000. It has been a long haul around the track, the race is nearing an end, there will be no winners, but there were NO losers. May 17th a bad day for me, as w
ll as June 17th. Too many young men wasted.

ow know what happened. His best buddy wwas with him and held him as he died, and has contacted me after these 32 years. I say what a "waste", and most of us are asking "why"? Khe Sanh was disbanned 23 days after his death. That very fact hurts almost

Great page Doc! Keep up the good work. One of the things I read on your site was “Once a doc always a doc”. No it never leaves you does it. I served 26 years with the Canadian Forces as a medic, in base units, field units with the combat arms and in the l
tter years in the Canadian Forces Surgeon Generals office at National Defense Headquarters in Ottawa. Wore the title of “Doc” with pride as we all did (and still do) for a number of years. Then one day as a young solder stationed with an armored corps r
giment, my company Sergeant Major who it seems that almost every time he saw me I was handing out or putting a band-aide on someone started to call
me “Bandaides”. This became my callsign and has followed me throughout my time in. I pulled the pin three years ago, the name has stuck and I am still called Bandaides when I see old friends. Doc, God bless you, its guys like you that me proud to have bee
a medic. I will visit again.

I served as USN Hospital Corpsman from August 1971 to November 19, 1975. After Corps School (Co. 272), I served 15 months at the USNH Beaufort, SC
as a general duty corpsman. I was then xferred to NAVCHAPGRU in Williamsburg, Va. for 8 months. I received combat and weapons training there and earned the Navy's "Expert Rifleman" award during training. NAVCHAPGRU at Cheatham Annex is an extension of the
SEABEES and was developed to handle the Navy's logistic demands of cargo handling in a combat zone. We were on call "anywhere in the world in 48 hrs". I made second class while there and because of that I was xferrred to the Pre-Comm unit of the USS Nimit
CVAN-68 at the shipyard in Newport News VA. I finished my enlistment on the Nimitz as a general duty corpsman and was assigned the duties as the first Preventative Medicine Technician aboard Nimitz. Navy schooled PMTs took over when I got out in November
1975. I since have worked in the Nuclear Power Industry at two Nuclear Power Plants and currently have 20.5 yrs with my current company, am a grandfather of three, and currently convalescing at home due to a motorcycle accident July 18, 1999 that separate
all but 2 ligaments on my left knee. I'd like to hear from any Doc's who were at any of my stations. Semper Fi

Thanks for the great page. I am a Blue Water Vietnam Vet who was a Gunnersmate while on active duty in the USN. In Boot Camp I wanted to be a Corpsman but they would not let non- high school graduates in the schools. I served and left active duty. After
a nine year service break, I entered the USAR and they told me my civilian profession was more like a MEDIC, so I went to basic medical training at Ft. Sam Houston, TX and served three years in USAR as a MEDIC 91-B-20 /91-G-20 in the 3297th ARHOSP
nd 860th Combat Engr BN. Re-enlisted in USNR as Corpsman (HM2) completed FMF training at Camp Lejune, NC ( NEC 8404) and was attached to the FMF for a number of years. Served with 4 FSSG HSBN, Branch Clinic, MCLSA Albany, GA and as Command Senio
Chief of 4th MAW MED MAG41, additional assignments with Fleet Hosp 14 and NAVHOSP JAX. I realized my desire to be a CORPSMAN as the result of serving as a MEDIC. I have the greatest of respet for all of those who sacrafice and "SERVE TO SAVE" be
they my SHIPMATES, DEVIL DOCS, or FELLOW SOLDIERS.
I am proud to count myself among your numbers, CORPSMAN and MEDIC. You continue to set the example for those who truly uinderstand the meaning of SERVICE.

I joined the Navy and became a Corpsman. After corps school I never saw the Navy again. I was wounded twice serving with 1/9, 3/26 and 3rd Recon. I was awarded the Bronze Star and Navy Com.
I do not regret serving with the Marines. It was the proudest part of life.

I entered the USMC in Jan of 1964.I had no idea that we would be with the Navy in anyway shape or form , except to make a landing on shore. What a dummy I was. The first thing I see in bootcamp besides the DI are all the Corpman. What's this? The jerk nex
to me at the physical starts calling them snowballs and squids. I tell him to shutup while laughing under my breath because I never heard those terms before and they struck me a lil funny. Well needless to say the DOCS to EXTRA SPECIAL care for him. It w
s great even though he was a fellow jarhead the jerk that he was.well i ended up always being stationed extra close to the Navy ie. Seal Beach NWS.Charlie Med. and Delta Med. in 1967. Stateside the corpman would always say, when thy were teased by the Mar
nes, Who do you think going to save your ass and take care of you when shit hits the fan? God little did i know then.I didn't realize till combat what you guys were all about though you always had my respect stateside.I realized from the git go that i was
getting what i bargined for in combat, but you guys,I felt terrible for you thinking that a lot of you joined the Navy 'to see the world , aboard ship of course.Nobody but nobody put themselves at risk as you, My Comrads in Arms. I lived with you, I died
ith you,I loved you.I could NEVER say it enough I thank you ALL. May God bless you always.

Thanks, Doc Brunner for providing us medics/corpsmen a special place to "sign aboard" I was a Army Infantry platoon medic with the 1st Battalion 27th Infantry "Wolfhounds" 25th Infantry Division '67 - '68 .....Have serious case of PTSD now from many firef
ghts/battles, etc. that I was involved in. one of most serious action took place on 6/3/67 when my Alpha Co. patrol of 22 men got hit hard by hardcore VietCong Company size.... I lost 7 KIA and & WIA that early morning around 0230 t0 0300 hrs.......I was
recommended for a Silver Star.....but I turned it down.....didnot mean a thing to me at that time......later battalion headquarters insisted that I accept it....but I deros out of country...they said it would be sent to my next duty station in Japan at th
106th US Army General Hospital, Kishine Barracks......never received it...still doesn't matter....just writing all this down in hopes to hear from my fellow medics that I served with it Vietnam would see this along with the nurses and medics I worked wit
at the Burn Unit at the 106th. Would like to know that everyone made it home okay and are doing well with families and careers. thank you, doc alan m. mitose

very interesting site....obviously being a corpsman meant something special to you as it also did for me. unfortunately, I left the active side after six years as a very bitter HM2 for reasons I won't bore you with now. I
was out for 13 years when I decided to affilliate with the reserve. They offered me two
choices.....re-enter as an HN or re-enter as SK1....having been a non-8404 corpsman (here's your greens, go to the field) I figured this one out quick......so now I'm a skivvy-kounter. Thought I'd never have to wear bdu's again, but
chose to do my active duty the last two years at
camp pendleton.....got some nice summer cammies out of the deal.....anyway, I ramble on.....wish I could locate some of my buddies from usnh guam, 73' to 75'. Your story was interesting. Correspond
sometime.

doesn't want to. He lives near Raleigh and is involved with some vet groups in that area. I live near Shelby, NC.
