About the Author
Although not actually born in Twyford my family moved here when I was about one so I have grown up here. This web site was initially created as the coursework for one of my modules during my final year at University but I try to keep it up to date when I have the time.
Interests
I have a wide range of interests and hobbys some of which are as follows
Running
During my last year at University I did quite a lot of running including several 10km races and a half marathon. After quite a long break, due to working in London (not the best place to run) I have recently started training again and have recently completed several 10k races in about 42mins, the Reading Half Marathon (Mar 2000) in 1h29m16s and the London Marathon (April 2000) in 3 hrs 17mins putting me in the top 8% of runners. I'm also currently training for the 2002 London Marathon.
Going to the Gym and Swimming
I try to get to the Gym and Swim twice a week however due to work and other commitements this does not always happen.
Canoeing and other Water sports
I have done a lot of canoeing in the past including achieving my 3 star and proficency qualifications and have been on several expeditions on the River Wye and off the South Coast. I am currently canoeing once a week. I have also done a fair bit of Water Skiing and Wake Boarding. I plan to Canoe the DW sometime in the future.
Mountain Walking
I have completed numerous expeditions in the Brecons, Snowdonia and the Lake District including doing the Three Peaks Challenge (Ben Nevis, Scarfelt and Snowdon non-stop) three times with a record of 21 hours 45 mins and a week of high altitude walking in Africa.
Travelling
I've visited many countries including France, Holland, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Denmark, Switzerland, Austria, Slovakia, Poland, Hungary, Africa, Indonesia, the US, *.
Porsche's and other Cars
I did have a Porsche for two years but due to a ban for driving a bit quick I have had to sell that and am now driving a company car for a while although I plan to buy a Porsche again when my insurance comes down to reasonable levels. Link here to my Porsche and other cars page
In Car Entertainment
Having had what could not be called a subtle system in a previous car I also have several plans for doing something with my next car but it really depends what it is.
Home Audio Equitement
I currently have a 'satisfactory' system at home comprising of Marantz, Mission, Sony, Linn, Atacama, Rega & Ixos components, but I would like to add a DVD player and digital tv, however due to the current cost of these and the rate at which the prices will come down, I have decided to leave these for a while
Pc's and the Internet
During my career I have developed eCommerce sites for major UK financial institutions and have worked in all the four major banks in the UK. Currently the only stuff I'm doing on the Internet are these Twyford Pages and some stuff for friends at the moment.
Acedemic History
After going to local schools I left for Staffordshire University in 1993 to do a honours degree in Computing Science. During this course I spent one year working for British Airways at Heathrow and finished in 1997 gaining a 2:1 Honours Degree.
Work History
Waitrose, Henley (Feb 1991 - Oct 1996)
During first weekends and then vacations I worked as a sales assistant. This involved managing a section of the store and included monitoring stock levels, supervising staff and dealing with customers.
Victory Graphics, Slough (May 1993 - Oct 1993)
This job involved working in a team using CAD to produce printing plates, often to tight deadlines and at short notice which taught me to work accurately under pressure, and developed my time management skills.
British Airways, Heathrow (June 1995 - June 1996)
As an Industrial Placement during my University Course I worked in the department of Information Management (IM). My work included :-
Managing a network of 25 users.
Supporting a graphics development area. This work involved advising users with queries ranging from font and graphic use to the different types of file formats.
Developing a database system in Microsoft Access. This involved following the complete software development cycle from feasibility study to implementation & maintenance.
Creating presentations for high level management.
Organising events for management & staff. (For example, one event I organised was for network managers to visit a British Airways software supplier to learn about licensing).
CMG Admiral, London (July 1997 - Date)
Working within the banking group I have worked on several projects for major high street retail banks using development tools such as Visual Basic 5 & 6, SQL Server 6.5 & 7, C++ and Btreive Databases. I have recently been involved with eCommerce developments and have various skills in this area.
