Descendents of William Sands, Senior1 William Sands, Sr. was born 05 March 1755 in Hampton, Elizabeth City County, Virginia and died 05 November 1836 in Sullivan County, Tennnesse. He married Susannah Bennett on 12 March 1789. Susannah was born 13 October 1768 in Amelia County, Virginia and died after 1852 in Sullivan County, Tennesse. Susannah was the daughter of John Bennett. John Bennett died before 1789. William served in the military in 1780-81 in the County Volunteer Militia, 12th Virginia Regiment. He enlisted while living in Nottoway County, Virginia. The 12th Virginia Regiment was under the command of General "Light Horse" Harry Lee. He was discharged about April 1781 before the Battle of Yorktown. In 1833, William applied for a government pension based on his service. He was 78 years old then. Soon after he and Susannah moved to Sullivan County, Tennessee to live with their son, William, Jr. After William, Sr. death, Susannah moved back to Stokes County, North Carolina to apply for a widow's pension. At that time she lived with her youngest son, James. William and Susannah had the following children: 1. William Sands, Jr. was born 28 September 1798. 2. *John Sands, Sr. was born 04 October 1796 in Virginia. He married Mary. Mary and John had the following children: 3. Sally Sands was born 26 January 1790 4. Nancy Sands was born 10 October 1793. 5. Elizabeth Sands was born 1800. 6. James Sands was born 1802. 7. Polly Sands was born 1804 8. Patsy Sands was born 1806. John Sands, Sr.2 William1 *John Sands, Sr. was born 04 October 1796 in Virginia. He married Mary. In the 1850 Stokes County, NC Federal Census John is listed as a farmer. Mary and John had the following children: 1. Tandy Sands born 1829 in the Snow Creek District, Stokes County, North Carolina. She moved to Carroll County, Virginia and died there. 2. John Sands, Jr. was born 1832 in the Snow Creek District, Stokes County, North Carolina. He served in the military about 1861 in the 53rd Regiment Infantry of North Carolina. John was a farmer by trade. In 1850 he was 18 years old and living in his father's house. 3. Daniel Sands was born 1834 in the Snow Creek District, Stokes County, North Carolina. 4. *Mary "Polly" Sands was born 1836 in Stokes County, North Carolina and married James Monroe Hill born 1836 in Stokes County, North Carolina. They were married 21 July 1856 in Stokes County, North Carolina. James died 06 July 1909 in Tazewell County, Virginia. He was the son of Thomas Hill and Louisa Lankford. 5. Susan Sands was born 1840 in Stokes County, North Carolina. 6. Christopher Columbus Sands was born 1842 in the Snow Creek District, Stokes County, North Carolina. He moved to Norfolk, Virginia and died there. Columbus served in the military about 1861 in the 22nd Regiment of North Carolina Troops. After the Civil War he moved to Norfolk, Virginia. His only living descendant is Charles Victor Sands who lives in Lusby, Calvert County, Maryland. 7. Sally Sands was born 1840 in Stokes County, North Carolina. Mary "Polly" Sands3 John Sr.2, William1 *Mary "Polly" Sands was born 1836 in Stokes County, North Carolina and married James Monroe Hill born 1836 in Stokes County, North Carolina. They were married 22 July 1856 in Stokes County, North Carolina. James died 06 July 1909 in Tazewell County, Virginia. He was the son of Thomas Hill and Louisa Lankford. Please see the previous article on the HILL Family descendents, James Monroe Hill. Polly is buried in Smith Cemetery in Red Root Ridge in Tazewell County, Virginia. According to the 1920 Federal Census for Virginia Polly was living in her son Elias' household and her age was stated as 84 years old and living with a spouse named William Cockran.
