John Keefer was the son of Peter Keefer and wife, Anna Mary Magdalena Saylor. The heirs of Peter were proved by a series of quit claim deed to settle his estate. My first information on John came from these and some baptism records and census records. A correspondent asked for help figuring out the people listed in the probate papers of Henry N. (Napolean) Keefer and the will of his brother George W. (Washington) Keefer. Neither married so their closest heirs were children of their father’s brothers and sister, as George mentioned in his will of 4 March 1913. He left money to the children of Samuel Keefer. The others were, he said, living in Wabash, Indiana and named them: Elizabeth Troyer, Catherine Lint, Sarah Truss, Daniel Keefer and Jeremiah Keefer. Henry N. Keefer left a will dated 16 May 1929. The probate papers for Henry included a long list of next of kin, many living at that time (1930) in Indiana. George and Catharine Keefer were parents of George W. and Henry N. as confirmed by Henry’s will and census records. The Fairs mentioned were cousins (Charles Fair married Catharine Keefer, a sister of John’s).
John’s widow had already been found living in Wabash County, Indiana along with some of her children, so work was begun to find out more about the names in the two wills. As others contributed to the research, it became apparent that George, the father, was indeed the son of John. Another child, Sarah Elizabeth, the wife of Conrad Truss was then attributed to John also. Slowly the clues began to fit together. What follows is now what we can prove about this family.
